Irv 115 #1 Posted May 12, 2013 So my son-in-law calls-his crapsman won't start. I go out there and try it and nothing but a click from the starter. Tried jumping it, same thing. I take the top cowling off and low and behold, mouse nest packed so tight the flywheel wouldn't turn. Clean it all out and blow it with a blower. Tape the wires they've eaten the insulation off, put it back together and away she goes. Then notice gas spraying around-cracked hose from fuel pump to carb-replaced that and he was off mowing his 8" of grass. I've told him before to put a couple dryer sheets around the motor for the winter, it keeps them little buggers away.
rick 257 #2 Posted May 19, 2013 LOL, my mice used the dryer sheets to build the nest! I now keep mouse traps on the engines of two, and a box of rat poison in the tool box of the C100.
wallfish 18,184 #3 Posted May 19, 2013 Yup, mice had used the dryer sheets for a nice fluffy nest in one of mine too. Every engine that sits in my backyard for any amount of time will provide a nice home for them under the housing except for one. It sat out there for almost a year so when I opened the housing to clean it out, ABSOLUTELY nothing except a snake skin. I wonder if a fake rubber snake will work? Tankman 3,523 #4 Posted May 20, 2013 Try a large rubber cat decoy? Any solution to keeping mud wasps out of the engines cooling fins? I recently pulled the tins off a long quiet 16 hp Kohler. Had to clean a lot of mud out from the cooling fins. Kohler ran fine though, naturally.
