Brakes on GT14???

Prolly a reeeeeeeally dumb question, so excuse the newbie! 

 

The other day I was moving some dirt with my GT14 and a wagon, but where I had to shovel the dirt from and put into the wagon, was on a small incline.  Well, I backed the tractor and wagon down into the spot, which was about 1/2 way down the small 10' hill.  Then I realized, I had no way of dis-engaing the hydro tranny, and getting off the tractor to fill the wagon with dirt.  So I ended up putting a log behind the back wheels to try and hold it there while I filled the wagon with dirt.  But of course as the wagon filled with weight, it pulled the tractor over the logs and away it all went down the small hill and I almost ended up in one of those viral dumbass video's going around the internet.  Only this time I would have be the actual subject of the laughs!!

 

So, how do ya do this?    Can I stop my GT14 somehow?  There are no brakes....????

Neutral on the tractor should be its brakes. When the lever is right in the middle it should prevent the control valve from moving forward or reverse and locking the transmission. That said, i thought the lever that locks the belt tensioner in place also locks the transmission. 

 

Its been a few years since I've had a GT14 so don't hold me to it.

Mine absolutely won't move if you shut off the engine. other than that I'll have to check.

Mine when in neutral is a runaway tractor. was scary when I was loading it on the trailer. Hit the brake to stop and it started free wheeling in reverse. Thankfully it wasn't an aggressive ramp. Still scary. figured I needed to adjust something.

Hmmmmm..... I was shutting off the engine, but I can't recall if I was taking it out of gear or not?   Maybe that is what I did wrong, I need to leave it in gear and shut down?   I'll give that a shot....

The only brake on a GT-14 is the parking brake. The hydro uses "dynamic braking" to stop.

Fluid flow is neutalised to stop. If the drive engagement lever is "up" and it still moves, the parking pawl is likely worn.

I've had machine shops rebuild the pawl for about $20. Removal of the pump and motor is the messy part but its all worth it in the end.

ok just did testing & redrider is correct as to the parking brake is the right side  hydro drive, up is brake .

 

ok I put tractor on steep hill & engaged brake I got no difference from the down setting ,if I depress brake/neutral PEDAL I get brake BUT I do get a bit of creep .So I'd chock wheels as you did regardless

 

Owners manual does not mention any brake adjustment. It does state that tractor in neutral may creep if on hill ,this is normal

 

this good to know , so I will chock wheels if I got a trailer load of wood on a hill :ychain:

 

I don't believe this will happen as most all my land is flat,but good to know reguardless

my GT14 will roll in neutral, not easily but it can be pushed. I did have it once cut out on a steep hill and it did run away !!!!!!

 

The parking brake is purely a pawl on the transmission which inevitably wears and becomes ineffective.

 

There is a rumour that some folks repair the pawl without splitting the tranny, it's tight but the pawl can be removed.

It is no rumor. I have repaired many parking pawls and never split a hydro case.

Remove the pump and motor as a unit and you can get to it.

Long angled needle nose pliers do the trick!
