ricksrj58 273 #3 Posted May 9, 2013 thanks brian.i take it the throttle cable is mounted to the flywheel cover, and is that the type of air cleaner that the rj with a 1200 would have had on it? i do have some of those that i replaced the paper innards with foam. ricksrj58 273 #5 Posted May 9, 2013 ok so your saying that this engine just as it sits in the pic with the oil bath on top is correct for my rj35?
buckrancher 2,695 #6 Posted May 9, 2013 if your RJ35 is a 1955
buckrancher 2,695 #7 Posted May 9, 2013 the air cleaner may have been a metal one (still a oil bath) check with vince or charlie on that
Jake Kuhn 1,579 #8 Posted May 10, 2013 Rick, the early 35's had a setup like you have as brian stated above. It looks like the 35 you are currently restoring is a 57. If you want it to be correct it would be like brian showed, but you could always use the early setup like you have too. The paper air filters are getting pretty darn hard to find and can bring up to 75 bucks on ebay now.
VinsRJ 723 #9 Posted May 10, 2013 Brian nailed it on the head... the motor you have pic'd would be more correct for an early 55 RJ35, the early RJS even used the plastic down draft oil bath... the direct carb mount (as I call it) would be correct so to speak for late 55 through 57 (1200's and/or B1290's)... one thing to note (at least for me) those short gov arms are tricky to get set up compared to the longer style. Just a hair of adjustment goes a long way with those short arms. I believe I have a bunch of the longer gov arms if you need one. The paper filters can be found, I think $75 is a touch to much but I have bought a few of evil bay in just the last couple of month for around 15-25 bucks invcluding the shipping.
