D180 question on value

Recommended Posts

MarkPalmer

I'm looking at a D180, and without saying what the asking price is I'll describe it.  It's in what I would call very good condition.  Nothing appears abused, everything works, has the 42 inch mower deck also in working condition, no other attachments.  The K482 and hydro run properly, and the tractor by appearance has been well maintained.  Cosmetically It shows normal wear and tear, original paint is in good to average condition, nothing is dented, dinged, rigged, or missing on the tractor.  What would you who are knowledgeable on this model think is a fair price for a D180 in this condition?

Thanks!

I'll stick my toe in the water and say....if that is all that is has.....400....maybe less.  If it is a plain jane D then all you can do is mow and pull a trailer.  You could do that with any model.  3 pt would add a couple hundred in value cause the usefulness would increase.

Just saying....now my D series is worth way more than that....lol...it is all perspective....

Last summer one was for sale near me, kind of sounds like in the same condition as the one you are describing. The owner wanted $500 for it. I walked away. I thought that it was kinda high for just a pulling and mowing D.

There you have it!

Now, let us know what YOU think it is worth, or what the asking price is, and if you buy it or not.

Pictures would be a big help too!

I recently paid $400 for a parts tractor (D-180) with a running engine.  The body was rusty, but restorable.  For a good running D-180, I probably wouldn't pay more than $800 - $1000, and it would have to be in exceptional condition.  Maybe slightly more if it has all the bells and whistles.

Another avenue is to look at evilbay.  You can search past auctions and see what they sold for.

Thanks for the replies.  They are asking $1100.00 for this one.  I think it's worth $800-900, and I'm going to offer them $800 at first and see if they bite.  If they want more than $900, I'll pass.  I paid $800 for my Cub 682 in 2004, and I think the D180 is probably a slightly heftier machine than the 682.

Cool Mark.....give the thing a real good workout.....I'm sure you know the routine.  It is mentioned enough about the auto trannys.  You seem like a knowledgeable guy.  Good luck with it.  I like mine and that is why it is worth more to me than what it is worth to anybody else.  I just start it up to hear it run...lol...how goofy is that???

I am wondering what a D series tractor weighs on its own with no attachments? I know a guy who has one that supposedly runs like a top, and the auto trans works perfectly as well. He just wants to make room and has offered it to me for sale. I am curious what one weighs so I can decide if my trailer can handle it or not. He don't know what model it is, but said it has a twin cylinder Onan on it that runs great. What models came with the Onan? It has no attachments so I don't know what I would do with it other than pull something around. I already have other tractors that can do that, but the big D series has always looked neat to me. He says it has a rear PTO but no 3-point hitch. I need to check it out and decide if its worth messing with. It might just be a big space eater for me and not worth the hassle.

Right about a 1/2 ton.....  That would be a D-160 with the Onan...

Pretty good guess on the weight Bob.  I have a B,C,D service manual that lists the dry weight of a D-160 as 875lbs (a D-200 is listed at 1025lbs).

Is the 16 horse Onan regarded as a good engine? I have a 520-H with the 20 horse, and its a great engine. I am assuming this is the same engine with either a shorter stroke or smaller bore?

Well after reading this forum I am probably going to pass on the D-160. Sounds like they are more hassle than they are worth. If it had a 3 point and an attachment or two I would feel differently about it, but it don't, and it sounds like parts are too hard to find for them.

The key word is "dry".  Finally fired my D200 up and gor her running last night and crap does that thing hold a lot of fuel!!!  8 gallons!!!  I got to get a bigger gas can - tank was dry as I had cleaned it out and replaced fuel lines and had to fill it up and it took me three trips to the gas station.  It was like $30 in gas!

Yes and that's why I don't even think about driving more than 100 miles to pick up another tractor. I just don't know with the prices some people around me are asking for Wheel Horses it's just not worth the added cost of gas to go get one.
