New member, what do I have?

Hi guys/gals

As stated in the introduction section, I am a new member here.  I just took ownership (in the form of a hand me down) of a relic Wheel Horse garden tractor.

Dad THINKS it's a 704, but I am hoping with your help, I can put a model number, and even a production year to this beast.

It originally came with a Cast Iron 7 Horse Kohler Magnum for a power plant.  It seized, and dad put an old Briggs on it.  That engine too bit the dust, and now it has a chineese knockoff honda on it, that fires first pull every time.

It has a 3 speed with reverse, cast transmission.  Serial number is 32829

Any insight would be awesome!

If it was Kohler powered from the factory, it would be a 753, 754 or 854.  The engine would have been a K series engine rather than a Magnum.

Welcome to Red Square.

The 328729 could be a 1963 or 1964 serial number.

Serial 32970 is a 1963 753

Serial 32829 is yours

Serial 32532 is a 1963 753

If a 1964 serial it lands between some dozer blade serials which seem to have been built in batches possibly in the off-season.

The lowest 1964 754 serial recorded so far is 47956 which were made available in May 1964.

The lowest 1964 854 serial recorded so far is 30509

Looking at the gas tank I would say it falls in the 63 era

Awesome!  I do have the belt guard for it too.  I will admit, the ole girl is a little tough around the edges, but she runs and drives.

I am a agricultural diesel and small engine mechanic by trade.  The rear end has a very distinctive "bad bearing" howl coming from it, so I am going to split the trans and replace the bearings. It will also pop out of 3rd, but dad says he had a replacement shifter made up for it YEARS ago, and its just a hair too short to completely get the shift fork past the detent to keep it in gear.  I will look into having another shifter spun up with a little longer tab on it to throw the shift fork a hair farther.

Welcome to Red Square...nice looking round hood. :)   Some of your problems with shifting is because the guard is not on.  The guard funnels slack in the belt toward the engine pulley when you push in the peddle so the transmission input pulley comes to a halt and you can shift the gears.  It acts as your clutch.  You will grind the gears in the trans if you shift without coming to a stop.  It is possible that your 2nd/3rd forked gear is worn which may be why it pops out of third.  The guard was made for the height of the engine pulley with a Kohler engine there, you may have to fabricate a little to make it work for the Honda.
