carter n-- hole in bottom of bowl

Recommended Posts

Help. I just purchased a 60 suburban w/ k91t kohler 4 hp engine. the fuel system is completely clogged , with thick black residue ( varnish from old gas ) i removed the carter N carb and there is a hole in the bottom of the bowl.it is beside the mount screw hole. it looks like there is a small plate inside the bowl and a small metal piece that was held in place by the residue which had a piece of a rubber oring?

Where can i find a replacement bowl for this? Is this normal? What about a different carb that I can replace the carter with?

the carb is in a can of Berryman cleaner right now and the tank has a mixture of water and muratic acid in it. The fuel bowl is completely filled with the thick varnish.

It is a float bowl drain. They were common on the little k90 and 91. It was nothing more than a spring loaded stopper to drain the gas out of the bowl. You don't need it, and can put a bowl on without it. The Carter N is a pretty good carb, I would not use anything different on a Kohler K engine.

Just rebuilt a Carter N and it too had the drain in the bottom. The bowl was quite corroded, so being unable to get a new one with the hole, I opted to just use a standard bowl from a Briggs & Stratton carburetor. B&S part number 221995 or Stens number 525-281. It was only $5.39 with free shipping on eBay, and a lot cheaper than a genuine Kohler.
