captahab 0 #1 Posted April 28, 2013 Hopefully, someone can help me with this. I have a 520 series with hydraulic lift, 60 inch deck, wheel weights, chains and a snow blower. Tractor has roughly 600 hours on it give or take. All the metal is in decent shape with minimal rust all around. Im not sure the year, something tells me mid to late 90s maybe. The tractor has a decent oil leak where the oil drain pipe threads into the motor block, atleast thats where i think its coming from at this point. It also needs a battery and the front tire has a leak. My dilema is the fact that the tractor was my fathers who passed away a few years back. He loved this tractor and that being said, I have a emotional attachment to it. I used the tractor to cut my property up til two summers ago along with a Kubota B7610 with a finishing mower. I cut roughly seven acres or so. Do to my recent good luck with my financial situation, I ve been paying a landscaper to cut my grass and the Wheelhorse sits in the garage. The Kubota has a front bucket and a hoe so, it still sees use in the winter for my driveway and planting trees and so forth. My Godfather approached me last week about buying the Wheelhorse from me. He offered me 1800.00 bucks for everything. Does this sound like a fair price for this tractor ? It seems low to me and Im seriously just considering fixing the leak and the other things and keeping it. It just bothers me to see it sit in the garage not being used anymore. Thanks for reading, any advice would be appreciated.....
AMC RULES 37,196 #2 Posted April 29, 2013 Considering the condition, included attachments, and the fact that you have a buyer approaching you... sounds pretty fair to me.
Challenger 27 #3 Posted April 29, 2013 Is the snowblower a two stage or single stage? If it's a single stage I don't think the price is too bad. I'm keying in on the rust and oil leak. If the leak were fixed and little or no rust and it's a two stage I think the price would be at least a $1000 more.
312Hydro 474 #4 Posted April 29, 2013 Couple of points I picked up that I'll bounce back to you. 1. Dad's tractor, you are attached to it 2.Even though you have a buyer, you say you don't need the money. Well, Can you live with selling it even though you may regret it later? (Sounds like you might from your post.) I can only say that when my father died I wish I had kept a few items that meant a lot to both of us. Nice 520H's with low miles and history don't come along often. Food for thought based on your post. OH, to
captahab 0 #5 Posted April 29, 2013 Thanks for all the replies on this, I appreciate it. Ill sleep on it tonight and see how I feel about it in the morning. Three generations of my family cut grass with that tractor. On the other hand, I hate to see it sit in the corner of the garage collecting dust.
ericj 1,579 #6 Posted April 29, 2013 you can always fix it and use it to pull a cart around the yard or the kids or grand kids. if you look around it's not real hard to find something to use it for every once and awhile. it does sound like you might regret selling it down the road eric j
leeave96 490 #7 Posted April 29, 2013 Doesn't hurt to have the tractor set and collect dust. You'll never have a family owned tractor like it again. My vote is to keep it. Things change - life changes. You might find yourself with time on your hands, maybe in retirement and just want to tinker with it. It's always a plus when you've got a family tractor for a hobby to keep going. Hang around here and you might find yourself glad you kept the tractor, but adding to the fleet. Good luck, Bill
Shuboxlover 481 #8 Posted April 29, 2013 Just to give you reference.... I bought my 1994 520-H (324 hours) with 2-stage blower, weights, chains, 42" dozer blade, and 42" recycler deck for $2,000... I sure didn't steal it, but it was worth EVERY PENNY!!! If you don't need the money, DON'T SELL IT!!!!
Wheelhorse84 87 #9 Posted April 29, 2013 Keep it!!!!
Hodge71 665 #10 Posted April 29, 2013 If it was me and money isnt an issue, I'd keep it. Sell the implements if you want more space or whatever. Or keep the mower and use the machine every once in awhile to mow an acre or so of the 6 you get cut. No better way to keep 'em healthy than to use them. Just by the way you phrased things it seems to have more sentimental value to you than anything, especially seeing that you have a big orange pumpkin with a finisih mower, hoe and loader on it. 546cowboy 302 #11 Posted April 29, 2013 With the history of the tractor and your family I would keep it if I had the space. As far as price, I wish I lived where all these replies came from. I have sold four 520's and never got that kind of money for them. Even the 520-8 in really nice shape didn't bring $1800. I agree with the guy about using it to mow at least once every couple weeks during mowing season. If you just let them sit there seems to always be something that decides to quit working. Use it and you will always be ready when it's needed and besides there's nothing like seat time on a Horse!
6wheeler 669 #12 Posted April 29, 2013 I agree with the other folks on here as far as your emotional attachment to the 520. However, You said it was your Godfather that approached you . There must have been a pretty good friendship with your parents for him to be your Godfather. Maybe he has an attachment as well if he was a good friend to your Dad. Just food for thought. What you could do? Sell it to him with the understanding. If he ever wants to get sell it? YOU get first dibs on it. That way you are both happy. He gets a good tractor that he may have an attachment to as well and it will be used like it should. You will know where it is. As well as knowing it is being taken care of and used by a close friend. You probably can go see it any time you want and maybe even use it a little. I understand the "not wanting it to sit around collecting dust". IMO, nothing is harder on a machine than not using it at all. Good Luck to you.
bean 85 #13 Posted April 30, 2013 if the gentleman who wants to buy it is your godfather, he IS family. 6wheeler said it all with great wisdom
richmondred01 2,307 #14 Posted April 30, 2013 Low hours, 60 inch deck, blower, chains, weights. Take no less then 2500.00.
Fordiesel69 271 #15 Posted April 30, 2013 Keep it. There is no residential tractor that will compare for any dollar amount. It will take a entry level sub compact tractor to even come close.
