Forget the Surburban - did you see what the dump cart fetched?

I'm sure you didn't miss the 10 cu ft dump cart on teatray as there were, I gather, a huge number of views. It's going to a good home :) - will be picking it up tomorrow.

Some of you will think I paid a silly price I'm sure but its not out of keeping with other attachments and you don't seem to get the chance that often in the UK. I'm still after a 5 cu ft cart and learned the hard way on the last two occasions that the smaller carts are worth rather more than I'd anticipated.

Not sure of the date yet but seems to be about decal changeover time 1977/1978 in that the loading warning one is in black but the WH ones are the 1977 red and white. Expect an order Mark!

There's a bit of rot to deal with but the plain sheet panels should make cutting it out and stitch welding some new bits in easier. Plenty of practice last year on a 1960s Sankey trailer for a military Land Rover.

I'll try and get some pics over the weekend.

Well Andy, I did see it, and although it's reasonably local to me, it looked too much work for me to slot into my schedule and available space.I have access to a good Saxon 12 cu ft and a diddy 5 cu ft tipper. My trailer needs are low really....... Glad at least it went to RS Member...... Price !, well it's what it's worth to you and I've no doubt you'll make it look like new again.

Congratulationson the new  buy  Andy , I dunno what you paid for it  ,  but that is the first one ive seen of that type come up for sale .

so i would say that it is a very rare type or that people are just keeping hold of theirs . and thats why they dont come up for sale that often .

although i did manage to buy a small tub cart myself a couple of weeks ago of the bay for £40 which was quite cheap  but needs a little  panel beating work and the wheels are not originial so need to change those..

Sometimes i dont mind paying a bit over the top for someting, especially as this stuff is getting so rare now you just dont know when it would come up for sale again .

Excellent purchase & enjoy your new trailer .

look forward to seeing it restored

A nice find Andy... I'd just give it a clean and an oil to keep the rust at bay... Of course you would have to get a Wh to match :D

I think it needs more than just oiling Ian, certainly on the inside!

This is a real rescue case, another year left rotting away and I really think it would have been too late to save the tub! I should really be finishing the Ranger when not engaged in fieldwork but have new toy must play (at least a little bit). So on Sunday I spent a couple of hours getting it a bit more presentable for a little photoshoot and straightened the tail panel and one side then took an angle grinder with abrasive wheel to remove at least the heads of all the carbuncles on the tub floor. Haven't seen corrosion like this since I changed the old metal cold water tank in the roof!

Found some wheels that would fit as the originals are rotted through in places and the tyres completely perished. The closest match in terms of tractor paint job is the new D but I thought the C-100 was a better size match and shabby enough for the job

So it was off to the small paddock......

I often think that I must have a magic camera in that it seems to have an inbuilt feature to make things like my restos better than they actually are. The vendor has the same camera I think but provided enough photos to leave me in no doubt as to what I was taking on before purchasing. Anyway, I can see from the pic above that it's going to be really worth doing and I'm well pleased with my purchase. :)

There's no dataplate, I guess it was a decal type that's long gone but I suspect it's a 77-10DC01 and dates from early 1978 in that it has a black load capacity decal and it appears as if they had run out of the smaller red / white WH for the rear panel and were using up the stock of large red /white WH. Mix and match old and new wouldn't have worked visually.

One decal that can just about be made out is the dealership one which I recognised from the vendors photos. It's the same place that my 227-5 came from and still has a perfect example on it Mark! Over the last three years a number of trips into what my wife now refers to as 'Wheel Horse Country' have been made to collect things from Surrey. One of the dealerships responsible for this concentration of horses was based in Effingham. There's still a dealership  at the address but under a different name now and for Hayter (owned by Toro).

The trailer is proving to be a bit of a distraction at the moment - it's a project for next winter but I can't stop thinking about how to tackle the various challenges (I'm sure you know the score). Spent an hour or so at the end of the day (after work so as to speak) investigating the worst wheel rim.

post-4509-0-18809000-1367360482_thumb.jp

I had to cut the tyre off and it was only once I'd managed to then cut through the steel bead cords that I could separate rubber from the expanded rusty steel. The holes in the pic above didn't get much larger once taken back to bright metal but the inside outer edge of the rim is very badly corroded and some additional holes appeared. I could bodge it with epoxy and filler but realistically the rim's load carrying days are over so would be for showing only. Tyres and tubes are easy to obtain here about a tenner for a tyre and tube. They're 4.80 / 4.00 - 8 wheelbarrow style tyres used on launching trailers but rims in this country are all plastic now which would look awful. If I lived in the US no prob, almost identical to OEM wheel with tyre and ball bearings rather than bushings cost £22 each but you can almost double this with shipping and import so I'll pass on it for now. :eusa-think:

Glad you think the wheels I've fitted look ok Richard. They're actually fronts from the B-165 I parted though based on color they're from a Westwood originally I think. They're actually better than the OEM to my mind in that they're wider and make flatter contact causing less damage in muddy conditions so I'm thinking about using them for everyday use. Hmmm, wonder what they'll look like in the right colour? Hmm, wonder if the fronts from the C-121 would fit, though I suspect they'd foul on the underside structure. Hmm, can feel more potential distractions on the horizon. :)

I think you're right about needing some fresh steel here and there Ian, though my aim will be to keep as much of the original as poss and thereby making a rod for my own back as it would probably be less time consuming to simply remake the whole tub!

i had a look at my rims but have to say that they are as bad as yours. the only reason ive kept it is if a good rim turns up i could swap the centres over

Trailer looks good behind the tractor. What are the dimensions of the body? I'm planning to build a trailer and your combination looks just right.

Looks like a good project, I was watching that on the bay and did wince a bit at what it went for, but as you say they are getting harder to find... its gone to a good home anyway !!

'Winced' is a good term Paul - I paid way more than I'd hoped for but just under my max bid - always a problem when two bidders must have something! I could have had a new Agrifab for less but I wanted one with WH badged provenence and 1970s pattern. Despite it's sorry state it will come back to look like new and I'm even hoping that Mark will do me 'Multi Power' dealership decal as I have a perfect example on the 227-5.

My everyday tip trailer for soil and rubble is a larger capacity orange Westwood which came with the 227-5 and also has the Multi Power decal on it. I only mention this in that it tends to indicate that the WH 10 cu ft cart was I suspect rather expensive for what it was when compared with say the Westwood hence despite buying a WH tractor (the 227-5) and WH powered grass collector, the original owner opted for a Westwood trailer which could explain why there aren't many WH trailers about. Just a guess.
