oneroadkingman 53 #1 Posted April 19, 2013 hello, i was wondering how much sand and water you could put in one of these polly type rollers with out causing damage to it .the size is 18 tall x 24 /30 in wide.thanks
GlenPettit 1,717 #2 Posted April 19, 2013 I filled a 2' dia x 3' wide one with sand and it was so heavy I couldn't pull it on the lawn with 16hp, on a flat cement drive it was fine. The roller sinks down a little in the grass and is much harder to pull, how much you can easily pull on your lawn is what you want. Rollers do a much better job leveling if pulled very slowly, first gear, rather than fast. Rollers are designed to hold water, at 8#/gallon, sand is much heavier. I think they were designed to be emptied in Fall. The volume and weight can be figured, is on a chart/label somewhere, I would guess about 200#.
B-100 Dan 7 #3 Posted April 19, 2013 I have a steel roller that I fill with water when I'm going to use it. I don't like to leave the water in it for fear I'll "forget" it and it will freeze. The memory is the second to go, can't remember the first. I agree with Glen, go slow. If your rolling the yard, chances are it's a nice day so enjoy it. I would not think you would harm your roller with it full of water, much easier to fill and empty than using sand.
Kelly 1,033 #4 Posted April 19, 2013 Mine is about 18 or 20" diam, and 48" wide, I fill mine to the top with water, and it pulls fine, I even pull it with a 8hp round hood.
oneroadkingman 53 #5 Posted April 19, 2013 yeah I got water in some sand in mind I can lift the one corner up probably weighs less than a couple hundred pounds I guess around there.my tractor Is a 264 H model it pulls it I don't have hilly turain pretty flat .Pulls around okay I just wanted to put more weight on it to try to packed some of my on even spots better. I was wondering I dump another 50 60 pounds of sand in it if I could maybe get away with it if it would hurt the roller anything
KC9KAS 4,744 #6 Posted April 19, 2013 18" diameter, 30" wide roller will weigh 276# if water is used for the weight.
cheesegrader 433 #7 Posted April 19, 2013 I use water, too. Empty it every winter so it doesn't freeze and split. My Ohio Steel roller is 24" by 50", and is a whopping #960 when full. It will compress a gravel drive. The 520 pulls it just fine, even uphill.
Butch 194 #8 Posted April 19, 2013 Other than for seeding a new lawn or knocking down those vole/mole hills why do you guys have rollers?
GlenPettit 1,717 #9 Posted April 19, 2013 Actually the sand would help keep the inside clean, but it's too hard to remove the sand. I've seen rollers with a "carriage' made just above the roller, to add cement blocks on to for extra weight. But, if the ground is moist and you drive slow, it should do an excellent job of leveling with just water. - - - - - - - - - - For me, the moles cause a lot of problems with their raised tunnels and mounds, sometimes those mounds at 8-10" high, perfect little pyramids, @#!*&. Now if I just could figure out to harness their tunneling skils into the garden only. And Butch is right, overuse of the roller is not good, causes over packing, especially on heavy clay soils. Hey Bruce: I also like your favorite model !
