Need help removing a pulley

Recommended Posts

Forest Road

Does anyone have a clue as to how this comes off?

post-5562-136632968297_thumb.jpg

It would appear that there's a cone inside. It was secured by 3 1/4" x 2-1/2 bolts. I believe that the pulley slid over the cone. When the blots were tightened the pulley forced the cone to lick onto the shaft. I have a 3 jaw puller on there. Using an impact gun with low force. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Pick at the other three holes. I think you will probably find threads in them. Put the bolts you took out in those holes and it will force the pulley off the cone as you tighten them up.

Won't work. Those 3 bolts went into the cone. They overlap the outside edge of the pulley. Locking the two pieces together.

I agree with Callen - it is designed so that the 3 existing bolts are moved to the other holes and when tightened each a bit at a time the cone will seperate - its a common design.

That pulley looks like a QD pulley it fits on a steel bushing with set screws as you tighten the screws pulls the pulley tighter on the shaft. you may need some heat to get it to loosen its grip on the shaft Good luck!!!

Another thought if those screws are used to tighten the pulley on the shaft, using that puller is doing the same thing, if it was me I would take the puller of and give it a big whack with a soft hammer or a piece of wood.

Is this the engine off the goodall jump start from a service truck on craigslist?

If you can, start and run the engine, then use a wire brush on the pulley grooves and look for some set screws. They could be covered in rust or paint.

Could be possible there is some set screws in the cone part as well.

Also if you get the pulley off in one piece, let me know if you want to sell it instead of getting rid of it or scrapping it, I might be interested price depending.

Goodluck!

If it is the cone type and you have all the set screws lose, take a hammer and drift and drive the pulley back towards the motor to break it loose

At first look it appears to be a taper lock bushing but the threaded holes are in the wrong spot for that.

Looks like a job for the Hissing Wrench

Callen was spot on ! It didn't just come off. It took a couple shots on the center bushing with an air chisel. post-5562-136640485442_thumb.jpg

Thanks for all your help guys!
