K301 Troubleshooting help

Recommended Posts

markjs

I'm trying to get a K301 running.  I haven't had it running since I bought the tractor.  I just had Brian Miller rebuild the carb so that should be good.  The tractor will start on about 1/2 choke and 1/2 throttle but it runs very rough- sorta like an old hit and miss engine, only hitting a lick every few revs.  And it blows black smoke.  It'll run this way for maybe 15-30 seconds but eventually dies.  Playing with the adjustments doesn't seem to help.   What is my problem?

probably wouldnt be a bad idea to put new points and condenser on too. a bad condensor will make em run like poop too.

Have you checked the valve gap adjustments? Have you checked the points gap? How's the spark plug? If all of the aforementioned items are set correctly, then go back to the carburetor. Set the needle valves to the starting point of 2-1/2 turns from bottom for the idle adjustment, and 2 turns for the main and try again.

Black smoke coming out WHILE it is running like a hit / miss engine is somthing to do with a very rich mixture.  If the choke is in the open position and you fuel fuel dripping out the front of the carb throat, could be a valve problem, but more than likely a carb problem instead.  Unless God himself rebuilt the carb, do not assume it is good.  If the carb sat too long, and it was run tested before it was shipped back to you, it could be all fouled up.

Normally with bad points & condensor, I have have experiance the roughness of a hit / miss, but never WITH a black cloud.

I would start with points, condensor, etc. If its hitting and missing it wiil draw fuel a revolution or two then hit and Burn rich due to not having burnt off the fuel from the last cycle.
