Too Hot

Recommended Posts

MalMac

I just fired up a K321 that I rebuilt, new piston & rings, rod, valves. Just had to hone it. The engine fired right up and runs strong. All I had to do was make some adj. on the carb. What i notice to me is it just seems to be running hot. I don't have anything measure temp with and the exhaust is not glowing. Just the being around it. The heat coming off of it seems to be more excessive that any of the other K I have redone.

I tried to richen up the fuel but that really cause's problems in it's running. The way it starts and runs I am assuming the timing is OK. Not quite sure what to think.

Couple of things in my opinion, one, even with a hone the initial running will run warmer or hotter than normal due to the brake in seating of the rings... that should go away as you increase run time... two, I would go ahead and inspect the timing mark... the likely hood that the timeing would be off is small but I would check anyways...

If it's not running over lean, it may only just be tighter what with all the new parts and tolerances. Did you go with the Standard Oil Spec, or go with mineral?.

Mineral based is less slippery as you know and the initial friction level increases during break in. I'd run it a few more times and see how it goes.

Using just conventional Non-Detergent oil for break in. I come to the conclusion that it's not running too hot. But now I am fighting some carb issue. If I can't get it figured out I'll post a new topic on that later.

Did you paint the fins too much?  I have painted some of mine on a K181 but just put a quick coat to make it look good.  My cousin loaded on a ton a paint and it ran way too hot.  It ended up burning the paint and cracking off.
