DaveAS 0 #1 Posted April 11, 2013 Where can I find the serial number on a 416-8 of unknown vintage? Any help would be great. I need to get a drive belt and don't even know what year it is.
leeave96 490 #2 Posted April 11, 2013 Under the seat on the rear fender on later models. Below the dash bezel I believe, someone correct me on this, on earlier models.
Irv 115 #3 Posted April 11, 2013 If it's a Kohler motor it is an 85-88. 89-96 would be an Onan. Look here for part #s https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?xCaller=Toro Welcome to RS
Tankman 3,523 #4 Posted April 11, 2013 I have an '85 416-8, 16hp Kohler. I don't know if the below belts would work if you have an Onan. Drive Belts: Tractor drive belt WH 7473 {HB/5Lx81.95"} 6982 Gates 21/32"x82" 5L820W Napa 21/32"x82" 258-082 Stens 5/8"x82" 85820 Goodyear 5/8"x82" L582 Dayco 5/8"x82" .625"x081.95" I forget which drive belt I used but, any of the above should work. Nowadays, I pick up Huskee Kevlar® belts at Tractor Supply, inexpensive and stocked.
DaveAS 0 #5 Posted April 12, 2013 I do have an Onan. I had a 82 in belt and could not even get it on the drive pulley's never mind the idler pulley! The worn belt I took off was aprox. 83.5 in. Weather or not it was right is up for discussion! I'm guessing the Onan engine must be the factor. The number on the tag under the seat is 31160801 36829. How do I read this? gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,510 #6 Posted April 12, 2013 The models using the Onan do use a different belt Toro # 107939 nla Use 93-9809 (HBx83.5") That is 5/8"x83-1/2". I don't know why but Gates lists these as replacements B80 Gates 5/8"x83" B80 Napa 5/8"x83" Not the normal type of belts they recommend. Garry
rmaynard 16,343 #7 Posted April 12, 2013 The number on the tag under the seat is 31160801 36829. How do I read this? The tag is read 31-16O801. The numbers that are important are: 31 represents the year (1989), 16 (HP), O not zero (Onan), 8 (8-Speed)
Chevydave 25 #8 Posted April 12, 2013 I have the same unit - the aftermarket belt could be a problem. I tried to use one and had trouble with the clutch disengaging to shift gears. I bought the Wheelhorse belt and the problem went away. I am not sure what brand I bought but I can tell you it was green. IMHO buy the wheelhorse belt and save yourself the hassel.
