HH 60 burning oil

Recommended Posts

68commando6

Hello I bought a 68 commando 6 from my friend about a year ago and he did a rebuild on the engine. It runs great and has great compression but it burns oil and I found out he had put synthetic in it like a car oil that hopefully that is the problem. I bought a quart of hd30 oil which is what is supposed to go in lawn equipment and I'm going to change it tonight. I reckon what I want to know is could that non hd30 oil be causing that Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Depending on what was done during the "Rebuild" synthetic oil use could be a factor in a consumption issue. When you say it burns oil, do you mean it actually smokes, or just uses some oil as it runs?

Synthetic will flow around loose guides and seals a  lot easier than the conventional 30wt will.

A change to the 30wt like you have done may solve your problem, and it didn't cost much.  Time will tell.

Yes it smokes and is fouling my plugs I'm just crossing my fingers that it will do the job otherwise ill have to get a new set of .010 over rings, re hone the cylinder walls, and check the valve guides Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'm betting the valve guides are the issue.

I do not think that synthetic is appropriate for breaking in a newly overhauled engine.  Stuff is so slick it may keep the rings from seating properly.  They may or may not seat now, but it can't hurt at this point to run it with regular oil and see.

Of course who knows if he honed the cylinder correctly....

I put it in a little bit ago and ran it still smokes but not nearly as bad. We shall see if the rings seat. I have it all ready for mowing season Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
