kenran 0 #1 Posted April 10, 2013 I recently got a 1972? wheel horse 800 special 1057. It has a 10hp kohler 4 speed. When i got it the engine would not run. I completly replaced all the ignition componates on it. I tore the carb apart and completly cleaned it. I can get the engine to run but it will only run on full choke and at least 1/2 throttle. It will not idle. Everything in the carb looks clean and all the passages are clear as far as i can see. Any suggestions On what else to look for to get it running? rmaynard 16,363 #2 Posted April 10, 2013 Still sounds like a carburetor problem. Did you let it sit overnight in carburetor cleaner? Did you make sure that the long needle valve is completely clean inside? That needle is hollow with several little holes. All the holes need to be clean and air must be able to pass inside the needle. How is the throttle shaft? Do you have a lot of play. Could be sucking air around the shaft. Is your gasket good between the carb and the engine? By the way,
VinsRJ 723 #3 Posted April 10, 2013 (edited) Also put a straight edge across the carb mounting flange in order to make sure its not warped. And Welcome to Red Square! Edited April 10, 2013 by VinsRJ
SCOOBY 312-h 14 #4 Posted April 10, 2013 also you should check the main jet, which runs up through the middle of the carb, take a craft pipe cleaner or some carb cleaner up through the main jet to make sure it is not clogged.

kenran 0 #6 Posted April 10, 2013 I did not let it soak in a carb cleaner yet. Im trying to find some one that does does the sonic carb cleaning local. The main jet and needle valve are completly clean and clear. The gaskets all look good and are sealing fine. I have not put a straight edge on the flange but will do it when i pull the carb back off. When i had it off and cleaned it everything seemed clear. Ill pull the carb off again tonight and go through it again and let it soak in cleaner for a couple days. Thanks for the help. I have a friend that has all the parts i will ever need for a wheel horse. And mike im from Monticello indiana
kenran 0 #7 Posted April 11, 2013 thanks for all the help everyone. I ended up pulling the carb off and spending about an hour going through it again. Put it back on the tractor and it runs great!
