Looking for some advice.

I'm going to look at a 89 520-HC tomorrow and wanted to know what you all thought. It's a one owner with 1900 hrs. The onan was overhauled last year by the same dealer it was purchased at and was just in for a valve adjustment and serviced for spring. I haven't seen any photos but he is only asking  $550 for it. Also has a 48" deck. Any input would be great.

That is my favorite model.  If the engine was overhauled and the valves serviced it should be good to go.

A test drive would be in order to make sure the hydro is working properly and the sheet metal would need to be in good order.

If it was dealer service there is a good chance any worn parts have been replaced.

The 520 HC is geared to go faster (around 7.5 mph) than the 520H (around 6.5 mph)..

I wish I knew ? I haven't found a good deal on a tractor in a very long time.

My main concern is about the Onan  engine. I have never heard one, let alone own one. I know parts are expensive and getting hard to come by. I guess I shouldn't worry about it to much. I can always repower if need be. As long as it has the swept axle and 1" spindles I'll be happy. Then all I'll need to do is find a 60" deck in good shape.  :)  :eusa-think:

I wish one like that would fall in my lap. If the Onan was overhauled he has way more in that tractor than the asking price  . You better take your trailer and the cash :bow-blue:  or someone else will slide right in there and get it :banghead: . You guys in PA. sure do get the deals. :angry-soapbox:

I was just walking out the door to go get it and my phone rings. It's the guy with the wheel horse to tell me he just sold it. I can't stand people like that. I can't say how I really feel on here, but I'm so hot right now you could cook eggs on my forehead.  :ranting:  :ranting:  :ranting:

If it was only $550 with an " overhauled engine" something tells me there was something else wrong with it or it was beat on pretty good.

I would not take the sale of the tractor too hard. 1,900 hours is a lot of hours in my book. For me unless the tractor is a very special one like something my dad owned or was a collectors item, I try to get tractors with less than 500 hours.

Good luck,

Bill

Bill is right, don't worry about it. There are still plenty of Wheel Horses out there.

Well I am sure another one will pop up. You being from PA there should be some to come buy... try being out in kansas, they are real scarce out here!

There are plenty of horses for sale around me. I'm just the type of guy that sticks to his word. Plus I'm looking for the heavy duty tractors. I should find a good D-200 with a 3 point hitch.

Well you said you were going to "look" at it so it sounds like you didn't have a commitment to buy it yet. You were asking us for opinions on it less than 24 hours ago which makes me think you hadn't firmed up a deal. I don't think you can fault the seller for selling it to the first guy with cash in hand. How could he be sure you wouldn't show up and decide its not what you wanted, meanwhile he sent the guy with cash packing.

Just my opinion.

Mike.............

For the really good deals you just have to move as fast as possible in order to beat out the competition.

I saw a listing last week for something I was looking for and I immediately called the guy up and said I will take it.

If you don't commit, then it is still open game.

A dealer serviced 520HC in running condition for $550 will not last long.

Even better deals will come up if you just keep looking.

If you really want a 520HC then look for one with low hours and pay more for it.

Wow,

It seems like every other month there is a sad story like this here.

The recurring theme is that it isn't yours until the money changes hands, and it is loaded on your trailer.

Don't feel too bad.  1900 hours is a lot of hours, no matter how much dealer service has been put into it.

I got my last 520H with 167 hours--but it was more than $550!

The thing that gets me is we had a set time to meet, 6pm. I would've at least called and said that I have someone else that wants it, is there anyway you could come sooner? I was the first person to call on it and it was listed for over a week. I'm not as angry about missing the tractor but the way the seller handled it.

I know cash is king but a persons word is worth a lot more to me.

Some people really have no clue on common courtesy so obviously he's one of them.

I've only bought and sold a few things on CL.....but I have no expectations of courtesy......but on those few purchases I've met some cool people.....remember if it weren't for CL many of us wouldn't have tractors to begin with and this site would not be what it is.  I never hear someone on here say....."jeez...the guy only wanted $50 bucks for it....being the honest and courteous guy I am I told him it was worth $200 and gave him what I should have".......  But I do hear...."man you stole that" or something similar.......

Just saying...... :)

sorry this Happen to you. I try to be fair when I'm selling. But I just sold my bobcat on  CL & had 4 or 5 guys say they were coming (no time just day) & never called back or showed. The guy who bought it called when he left & I promised to hold it till he got here. At least he called before you made the trip.

I had a Sears Suburban prior to buying my first Wheelhorse.  The thing had a 10 hp engine on it and it was tired, but it cleaned-up great.  I had a 3 pt hitch on the rear and a mowing deck.  I asked $500 for it and people started ringing my phone off the hook - LOL.

I was at work and a guy came by to look at the tractor and said, "I'm going straight to the bank to get the $$$'s."  My wife told him flat out, the first person with the cash get's the tractor, no holding it.  While the guy was gone, another guy showed up and bought the tractor on the spot.  As that guy was driving up the street with the tractor on his trailer, the guy who went to the bank passed him.  He was not a happy camper.

It's amazing how these tractors can sell FAST!!!!!

Lesson learned for that guy (and for me over time), is if you see a tractor for sale - don't wait, get to it ASAP.

I picked-up a Simplicity Landlord (thread in off-topic tractors) for $100.  I called the guy (some 100 miles away) when I saw the add that evening and said I'll be on your door step at 8 am the next morning (it was a Saturday).  He made no guarantees he'd have it, but would call me if he sold it.  Here's what I got:post-6085-0-93154300-1365687149.jpg

Of course it needs a new engine as the old one has a couple of broken rods, but that's a small detail.... :laughing-rofl:

OTOH, my Brother keeps telling me, "If I see the right deal, I'll buy one of these Wheelhorse tractors."  I found him one local, 314-8 with front blade, clevis hitch, newer 42 inch RD deck.  $500 was the price.  I said, now's the time - buy it before it get's away.  He came up with things like, I'll take a look at it this weekend or let me wait until this or that.  The tractor went quick and he is still looking.

Good luck on your next purchase adventure!!!!!!!

Bill

You guys are right, there are a lot of Wheel Horses here in Pa.  It's hard to drive around out this way and not see then, either in use or sitting.  The attachments are what are hard too find.
