Out of hybernation and on parade for a briefing

Recommended Posts

Spring has finally arrived in the UK (I hope). It was sunny and much warmer yesterday, overcast today but still so much warmer than it has been so it was time to wake the horses up and get them out of the stable for a dust down.

Mucked out the stable while they looked on then held a briefing on their various duties for the coming season.

I think they took it on board, just have to complete the servicing and get the decks back on to those that mow now.

Despite widespread concerns about the ethanol in gas issue, all started and ran fine once the fuel pump had drawn gas to the carb despite the fact that there's no stabiliser in the gas and I never got round to  draining the tanks or carb bowls for the winter.

For the duty briefing, looks like you had 'em standing at the position of attention.   :handgestures-thumbsup:

You've got a nice :wh: herd stationed overthere.   :flags-wavegreatbritain:

Spring has finally arrived here in Indiana too!   Hard to believe how long it has been has been Winter and/or cold, wet and cloudy.    The sun is finally here and green grass and flowers are here!   I am waiting for the Redbud trees to bloom in Indiana!

Glad to see your herd made it into the sunlight!

Yes Sir, a very nice team of horses you have! I am glad everyone is feeling Spring in the air now. It was good and warm here in North Carolina today with bright Sunny skies. Andy, I am looking forward to some more pics of your Wheel Horses.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. I'll respond to some specific observations.

Respect your horses and they'll respect you (I hope). Actually Craig two were excused parade duty, the A-800 that's in the shop at the moment being restored and the B-111 that's not in regular use and stored behind loads of other stuff in the barn. It was a case of workers on parade and they do all have to earn their keep.

Marv, cameras do lie! I've found they can make my resto work look better than it really is and in this case the herd as a whole look smart. One D has been restored, the other has an authentic natural rust and faded paint 'rat' appearance that would be difficult to achieve in the shop on purpose. One 'C' has been restored, the other is very much original 'working clothes'. I was going to repaint it this year but I've decided I can get another year out of it yet.

...and the 316 couldn't stop smiling!!

Mike............

Mike, that's 'Mr Smiley' the WH. He was one of those 'I don't need another horse but....' purchases from a famous auction site. He'd been hanging about in the rain rusting away in a guy's garden waiting his turn to be converted to a racing lawn mower. (Do you Have that in the US?) Vertical shaft LTs like the B-111 have long been favorites amongst the racing fraternity and there's a  B-111 in my collection simply to rescue one as they're fast disappearing either for conversion to race or simply for the Briggs engine to go in a racer. Anyway, the 316  had the smiley face painted on the front but that's about as far as it got as the PO decided a GT that size was not suitable so sold it on. The Onan's got 1700 hours on it but runs fine and it had a good deck that I restored this winter.

That's a beefy looking squad.

I've never really given it a thought but I guess they are 'heavy duty horses' as Richard (Anglotraction) put it. The Cs are the light weights at 10 & 12 HP with two 16s, a 17, and two 20s. No wonder my gas bill is so much.

Nice looking heard of WH GT's!

Thanks for the photos.

Do I own up to this I thought as technically two of them are LTs despite their engine sizes. It will be a sad day if I have to put down my 216-5 but so far despite pulling punishing loads for two years now it's shown no signs of any hind quarter problems. The 227-5 is my wife's mower - it'll be a bad day for us all if I have to put that one down.

It was overcast here again today but still warm and buds are begining to open. I've been amazed how we've experienced the same long cold winter both sides of the pond this year. I'll post some more pics soon.

Once again, thanks for the interest and all the positive comments.
