if you want to go new, try a harley coil if you cant afford a kohler coil........

the coil was $40 with shipping, if you have a bike shop close, then you could pick one up there. you need one for points ignition (around 5 ohms on the primary). you need to make up a bracket as its a different shape than the oem round coil.

or you could find a used kohler coil......

i picked mine up off ebay, search 12v ULTIMA IGNITION COIL FOR HARLEYS FROM 1965-1979 W/POINTS

Just a FWIW -- I have a D-18 with the Kohler twin and when my coil 'melted' I had an Onan laying around and tried it -- wouldnt work!

Heh, for several years I had 2 auto coils jury-rigged up, it worked, but was a bit cantankerous backfiring, lose one cyl, but good enough to run for 3-4 yrs, til I finally got a 'real' coil.

Sorry, I gotta keep my extra one for a spare. Try Kelly he is a member here. He supplies lots of parts in these parts. LOL

joes_outdoor_power on ebay may have what you need.  You could call him or email him from one of his listings.

Also search ebay for Kohler KT17.

You may have to wait for a good price.

The coil may be common with other Kohler engines as well.

Many cubs and JD's used the KT 17 Kohler engine. It wouldn't matter what series engine it is either. Any old Harley Sportster coil that used points/condenser will work perfectly. (Delco-Remey OEM).

Ask around and particularly at a Harley shop. Many of the AMF year Sportsters will be laying behind their shops in their fenced area. You may get lucky and find a used one for dirt cheap! I think the coil on my old long gone 1975 Sporty was one of the few things that didn't go bad on that worthless POS.
