tibadoe 4 #1 Posted April 5, 2013 My Kohler 14hp has a very small & slow oil leak where the muffler bracket bolt screws in. Anyone else experience this? Pretty much been doing so since new. Doesn't leak enough to where you need to add oil - just enough to attract dirt through out the summer. Any ideas on an easy fix? Maybe wrap the threads with the white tape? Duff 206 #2 Posted April 6, 2013 I'm not sure the white Teflon tape would handle the heat. Maybe some plumbers pipe dope that they use on black iron pipes in FHW systems? Duff
puddlejumper 67 #3 Posted April 6, 2013 Or maybe a soft copper washer that would mash and seal, something like a oil drain plug
pfrederi 18,711 #4 Posted April 6, 2013 Permatex High Temp Thread sealant.
tunahead72 2,553 #5 Posted April 6, 2013 I rigged up a short extension for my oil drain on one of my Kohler K241s many years ago, which leaked a tiny bit from the start. I used the white teflon tape for a while -- it worked, but it was tedious to pick out the torn pieces from the threads every time I changed the oil. My favorite local auto parts dealer recommended the Permatex high temp. thread sealant that Paul suggested, I've been using it ever since with very good results. You only need to use a tiny amount, they recommend applying it to 3/4 of a thread turn. The .20 oz. tube is part number 59214 (about $6), it's rated for 400 degrees Fahrenheit max. tunahead72 2,553 #6 Posted April 8, 2013 Just re-read this thread, and a question came to mind -- Does anyone know WHY Joe's engine would be leaking at that bolt, and does it indicate anything serious?
tibadoe 4 #7 Posted April 11, 2013 Thanks for the replies. I will see if I can find some Permatex High Temp Thread sealant. Does this stuff allow you to take the bolt out at a later time if needed? Or does it "lock" it in like the red Loctite?
pfrederi 18,711 #8 Posted April 11, 2013 It doesn't lock the treads..I do not think it ever gets really hard that is why it works as a sealant.
tunahead72 2,553 #9 Posted April 11, 2013 Ditto to that, it's why I use it on my oil drain plug/extension. You should be able to find it at any decent auto parts store.
pfrederi 18,711 #10 Posted April 11, 2013 Additional note, it is one of the few sealants that seems to work on gasoline also. Used it on a leaky carb fitting....
