tunahead72 2,551 #5 Posted April 1, 2013 Kohler K241S would have been original to a 1985 or 1986 model, but not with that spec. number. I suspect your engine came off another earlier machine, possibly not a Wheel Horse. You can check the Kohler web site for that spec. number if you have some time, or maybe somebody here knows it off the top of their head. I would do it myself now, but parental duty calls. I'll be back in a few hours to check back in.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,510 #6 Posted April 1, 2013 1985 310-8 originally had a 3 amp rectified charging system that was not regulated to charge the battery and a 2nd stator to run the lights only on AC current. The headlights will work only with the engine running and the faster it turns the brighter the lights. 1986 has the same charging system and they added a low oil switch to the back of the oil pan. This prevented the starter solenoid from working if the oil was low. The 82 in the 8254283 Kohler serial number tells us they made the engine in 1977. The 46764 spec number was made for Simplicity and had a 15 amp stator to charge the battery but Kohler did not supply the voltage regulator that was required. They left that up to Simplicity which was common practice with Wheel Horse also. There should be an external voltage regulator if you still have the 15 amp stator. Let us know what you find. The low oil switch is explained in this service bulletin http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/1049-wh61-90-388a-oil-level-switch-servicepdf/ There is a better copy but can not find it at the moment. Thought the illustrations may help. Better copy Garry
