csvt99 173 #1 Posted March 24, 2013 My 8 hp 877 is very loud. I would like to replace the muffler with something that will piss off my neighbors a little less. 1. I have concerns about being able to get the original one off. Any tips? 2. Does anyone have a good source for a replacement? I've seen some pics here of tractors with custom muffler set ups. I don't need anything fancy, just something to keep the noise at a reasonable level. However a small smoke stack might be cool, especially if it keeps the fumes out of my face Thanks in advance.

Martin 2,133 #3 Posted March 24, 2013 (edited) theres been a lot of discussion about exhaust pipe removal on the forum. search for 'remove exhaust pipe' or similar....... i have a method i use that works quick and easy, similar to the method mentioned above... the link is to a k241 that ended up in my rebuilt 1057 Edited March 24, 2013 by Martin
csvt99 173 #4 Posted March 25, 2013 Thanks Martin, I read your post. I'll do some searching and read up on the info that is out there already. Here are some pictures of my current set up. Looks like I will need to: 1. Decide what set up and parts (muffler) I need. 2. Get out the hack saw.
pfrederi 18,643 #5 Posted March 25, 2013 This is a cheap replacement muffler used on Cu Cadets and others usually on ebay for less than $30. Quitter than the pepper pot. I do not find stacks to be practical on working tractors what with tree branches and th exhaust being just a bout face height breathing fumes all the time. sorekiwi 761 #6 Posted March 26, 2013 I commented on this recently in an exhaust stack thread. I have this muffler on my Ranger with an 8 hp Kohler I really like it on the small block Kohler, quieter than a pepper pot, but also a lot less harsh sounding. I also have one on a big bock Kohler (12hp) and its still way to noisy on that, but on thhe 8 hp I think its great.
roscoemi 245 #7 Posted March 26, 2013 Mike, I'm gonna have to keep P'Chop off the forum for awhile. Your Ranger looks exactly like he wants his to look, he's startin to wear me down!
csvt99 173 #8 Posted March 26, 2013 That is the Gravely correct? I love the looks of the horizontal muffler with a heat shield that Volfandt used on his 856, but I'm not sure I want to do all the mods to the oil dip stick.

Yep, thats the Stens replacement for the Gravely. I can find a part # if you need it. I like the horizontal 300 series mufflers too, but havent found a cheapy aftermarket one yet. I think they are around $130 from Toro.
roscoemi 245 #10 Posted March 26, 2013 Mike, I'd like that part number if you have it handy.
csvt99 173 #11 Posted March 26, 2013 I second that! Also will a hardware store have the piece to connect the muffler to the manifold? Will the muffler thread right onto the pipe?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,462 #12 Posted March 26, 2013 This is from a Stens dealer in Ontario https://www.bantasaw.com/catalog/viewproduct.asp?i=256&p=151 Any I have got from them were made by Nelson. Good picture of it. Garry
sorekiwi 761 #13 Posted March 27, 2013 The side inlet will clamp down on the standard pipe nipple coming out of the block.
csvt99 173 #14 Posted March 30, 2013 Thank you very much. Now... If I wanted to put a heat shield on it since sticks out from the hood, would it be difficult?
sorekiwi 761 #15 Posted March 31, 2013 I have always intended to put a heat shield on that muffler, but in 3 years or so I havent got around to it. It hasnt damaged the paint at all, or the decal which is right there. My plan was to weld 4 small threaded bungs onto the muffler and fit a thin pice of stainless with about a 3/8" air gap to the muffler. One day I might do it. You can see how close to the hood it is in this shot:
stolly23 1 #16 Posted July 2, 2013 This is a cheap replacement muffler used on Cu Cadets and others usually on ebay for less than $30. Quitter than the pepper pot. I do not find stacks to be practical on working tractors what with tree branches and th exhaust being just a bout face height breathing fumes all the time. Is this on a k301? Is it decently quiet? I just a k301 on a c-85. Replaced the k181 and have temp. fit the muffler off the k181. but it is very very loud. Just purchased one of these and hope that it will work.
csvt99 173 #17 Posted December 27, 2022 So nearly 10 years later, I'm finally replacing the K181 on my 877. I'm either going to put the stock pancake pepper pot on it, or something else. This will be a working tractor, used by my two boys around the yard to get used to using equipment for work and how to back up a trailer etc. I want to keep it relatively simple and inexpensive. Any current thoughts? Thanks!
csvt99 173 #18 Posted December 31, 2022 After talking to my local lawn and garden shop, I'm just going to install a generic pepper pot. I can always mod it later if I want to!
