Spark problem.

Recommended Posts

So here's the deal. Loosing spark. Runs for a little bit and than drops off. Spits and sputters.

Here's what I've done. New condenser, points, coil, voltage reg, plug and wire, battery, key switch, and every wire in between. So what I'm saying is everything has been replaced electrical.

Still don't run right. Any ideas?

Did you check or replace the ground cables? Could it be a broken wire losing connection when it heats up?

Sounds more like a fuel (starvation) issue to me, especially since you've replaced almost all electrical components.

How did you determine it is "losing spark"?

Well it's not a fuel problem. The rod that moves the points has a very slight bit of oil coming out. I guess it's getting in the points from the look of things. Is there a way to stop this from happening?

Thanks guys

if you think this is from oil getting on the points from around the push rod there are two things that I can think of

first replace the push rod with a new one and check to be sure that the crankcase vent is not plugged up

One way to be sure it's an electrical fault despite all you've done is (if you have one or can borrow) to use a xenon timing light. With it connected to the HT lead you can watch the light flashing while the engine runs. It should help to show whether the dropping off is spark related or not.

Just a suggestion but it's a method that's saved me a lot of time on a few occasions now.

Ok well it was simple and stupid. The points some how came outa adjustment. They were at .045. Witch made it go out of time and drop spark. I'm not sure how they did that. Oh well I guess.

Adjusted em back and she runs like a champ yet again.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Glad it was easy. And you have all new electrical parts to boot.
