Agage1 83 #1 Posted March 19, 2013 I installed my rebuilt k241 in my new project tractor a few weeks ago and when I open the throttle it revs out of control. The first thing that came to mind was the governor so I adjusted it according to the manual And no luck. Next I went over the throttle linkage and everything seemed ok. So I popped the plug so I could inspect the governor. Nothing struck me as out of place so Tab intact and no broken gears. So I adjusted the governor again this time I pushed the tab in with my finger as I rotated the shaft. I started the motor again and this time the governor kicked in at idle. I could clearly see the gov arm moving at lower rpms. When I went to open the throttle up the gov gave out after a few seconds. So I'm a little stumped as to what's going on. I did use universal choke and throttle cables from napa which I thought might have something to do with it.so today I unhooked the throttle cable and started it up working the carb hand just to see if the gov would move and it didn't. I'd really hate to tear the motor apart because the tractor is all but finished and looks good. The motor spent some time at the machine shop it got a valve job, new rod and piston with rings and some porting. The motor idles great and runs good as long as I keep the rpms down. Any ideas? posifour11 723 #2 Posted March 19, 2013 I'm fighting the same thing. Mine idles fine, but the slightest move of the throttle sends it racing.
rmaynard 16,350 #3 Posted March 20, 2013 So you are loosening the governor arm and turning the governor cross shaft fully counter-clockwise while holding the throttle wide open? Then tighten the nut on the governor arm. The arm should be straight up. If this has been done correctly, I would check to see where you have the throttle stop set. Agage1 83 #4 Posted March 20, 2013 Yep I've gone through the procedure several times and adjusting the throttle stop doesn't help
rmaynard 16,350 #5 Posted March 20, 2013 Sure sounds like the tab is broken off of the cross-shaft. If you loosen the nut and completely remove the governor arm, you should only be able to rotate the shaft sticking out of the brass bushing less than a quarter turn. Agage1 83 #6 Posted March 20, 2013 The arm does stop and I popped the plug to see if the tab broke but it's still intact. Everything looks fine internally
rmaynard 16,350 #7 Posted March 21, 2013 Just a simple question. You said that the linkage all looked correct, but what is the position of the throttle stop? Look at the picture. Is your stop positioned like this?
