2013 - Anyone Mowing Grass Yet???

There's been a lot of snow pics and videos, but March is here and Spring will be here sooner than later.  I took a business trip today South from my neck of the woods, near South Carolina and rather than brown grass like around home, things are getting pretty green around here - and some of it looks like it's ready to mow.

 

Anyone started their 2013 mowing chores yet?

 

Just a reminder - get your fluids changed, tires aired-up, deck blades sharpened, spindles greased and scrape/paint the underside of your deck before you get started on this years mowing.

 

Finally - out of your fleet of Wheelhorse tractors, which tractor and deck combo will be your go to machine this year?

 

Last year for me it was my 1992 520-H with 48 inch mowing deck.  This year it will probably be my 314-8 with 42 inch rear discharge deck.

Over here in Uk , I have cut a small section of grass this year although we are still getting some heavy frosts in the mornoings . I cut the grass using a push mower just to warm up & test the engine and give it a bit of a run to get ready for the new season.

Sadly my ducks have ruined some areas of lawn by  constantly walking over the same area during the wet times and now have worn patches all over the place .

looking forward to some seat time now though and will be using my C121 to do the cutting

The first cut of the year was done a couple of weeks ago... I remember that day well... It was a nice warm sunny day. Since then it's been frosts and snow!

 

My weapon of choice (until my new Wh arrives) is my 312-8 with a cutting deck that was on a 518-H.

No mowin' here in Eastern Pennsylvania. I did see, 1st this year, robins runnin' around the lawn.

No mowing yet, but I did take the blower off the 120 (never did get to use it) and put on the dethacher and sweeper yesterday. Got a truck load of dead grass, leaves , sticks ,and pine cones. Will wait to mow just before Easter, So the Kiddies can find the EGGS easier. 

 

I did leave the blower on the 160 ----just in case.

We got near 2" of snow yesterday, and is still only in the 30's here I have month plus before I think about mowing.

Here in central VA, I could have mowed my ditch line last weekend.  That is where the grass is growing the fastest.  If it doesn't rain all weekend as forecast, I will be mowing my ditchline with my push mower, once I take it out of hibernation.

We had some warm days right after Christmas, so I went over the yard then to give it a final cut before January and February. Looks like I will begin the 2013 cutting in another couple of weeks or so.

Not mowing yet but hope to fertilize in the next week. By the way I don't know if it's just Jersey or the whole country but there is a chemical being left of fertilzer because of ground water contamination. I think it's the potassium has been removed.

First mowing is 2 months away..

 

I expect I will use the snowblower at least once more this season!

A bag of fertilizer is labeled as N-P-K (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium).

A number of communities are enacting phosphorus-free fertilizer regulations. The reason for these regulations is that the community leaders feel that homeowners are a major source of phosphorous pollution of their water systems. Too much phosphorous in the water results in an over-abundance of algae growth in the water which lowers the oxygen levels, introduces poisonous toxins and results in fish kill.

Here is some photos of Lake Erie western basin with the effect of algae.

Most of the algae is not from home owners, but farm run off. There is a lot of excess phosphorus in chicken and pig manure which gets spread on the ground as fertilizer. There is a lot of focus in Ohio to develop better practices for how and when to apply fertilizer to minimize the impact.

Here is what I am thinking for the upcoming season:

 

414-8 or 417-8 with 42" SD for the top of my property (I live on a rather large hill)

312-8 with 42" RD for the majority of the backyard.

C-81 with 37" SD for the sideyard.

212-H with 36" RD for the steep front bank. (With this little guy I can shift my weight so the tractor doesnt roll! Nice low center of gravity.)

The roll bar was built using whatever materials I kicking about the place at the time.. Box from and old trailer and legs from a portable cabin..

Used the 120 "worker" and the 48" drop spreader to put down 500 lbs of lime yesterday. Three days of light rain now in the forcast should soak it in real well. Then the rolling begins.May put the 160 dually trailer queen on this assignment , as this is not a dirty job.
