A minor miracle.... 42" snow thrower repair

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

Connecticut got a foot plus (looked like around 15" at my house) of wet heavy cement snow yesterday.... my 141 was doing its job when I heard a bang followed by what looked like a large black "snake" coming for my head---lol.   The original belt couldn't take anymore abuse after the blizzard and it snapped right at the point where it was joined.

A trip to the dealer drained my wallet of $48 for a 9750 belt....

I spent all day thinking about the drive pulley and how it hasnt moved since the day it was installed. Well I went home and there it sat in the driveway broke.....I couldnt believe that I loosened the two set screws and heated the hub cherry red with my mapp gas torch and give it one tap with a hammer and it popped pff and sat there sizzling in the snow.  WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO    if they only all came apart like that!

Cecil and Betty must have been looking down and cut me some slack!  :woohoo:

LUCKY, those old pulleys can be a real pain.

They are a little proud of those 9750 belts aren't they? $50 for a belt is ridiculous!

Ya belts are not cheap, but good one do last, if the pulley does not come off, remove the 3 bolts that hold the bearing closest to the pulley out, and the whole shaft will move back just far enough to change the belt.

Lucky Day indeed!!! I snapped the drive belt on my 314h once. I used a 1/2" rope weaved together to get her back in the garage. Check out my avatar. Nearest parts store is 40 miles away! Some vacation house in the middle of nowhere!!! Now I have spare belts on hand for the blowers and trans.

Hi--9750 is the snow blower/thrower (whatever the correct term is...) drive belt. A 7473 is the 8 speed/Hydro drive belt and is around $38 for the last one I bought.

Kelly--thanks for the idea on loosening the drive shaft... that would be a whole lot easier. In the past I have forced/pinched/wrecked the lip of the pulley to get a belt in there.... then have gone back and cut the pulley off and replaced it when I had the time.

These pulleys bend easy i guess... I noticed a wobble in my pulley now after I gave it a love tap while it was cherry red.... I may swap it out after the season---I need to work on my auger too, I helped a neighbor during the blizzard and put a serious beating on it. Never again.... although thats not my style. I end up beating my equipment to help out others. :banghead:
