Tractor found ?RJ

No pictures yet, owner says is a 1951 model, hood appears to be an RJ that had lights bolted on side of hood. Was there a RJ style hood in '51 or where would I search for a modle #, Rest of parts scatered so couldn't see a motor, tran, ect. If his price is right may pop for it. Owner says no seat or steer mechanism>

Any advise appreiated.

 

Oh yes, hood has no venting slots in front, fro pics from RJ58 maual looks same!

Its not a 1951. We need pics or some detailed descriptions to properly ID it. The non-vented grills were used right up to 1961.

RJ35s were made 1955 - 1957, had belt drive system

RJ58/9s were made 1958 - 1959, had the three peace three speed trans

Allright, I thought my views on her new what was lookin' at. Didn't want to argue with gent as he purchased it, prob someone told him wrong or has the incorrect hood. It looks like one on your avatar with solid front, no vent slots, Wheel Horse embossed and a slight cut out/curve where fits uo toward ?tank? ?dash?. I see you have a cable steer? May be why this one is missing steering. Man I'm so curious to see rest. He did say had a rear end ?trans? or?belt? whatever that looks like 

 

By belt drive, does that mean motor pulley drives belt that drives axel like go cart.

Sparky and Vins...thank ya'll so much, may save me a mistake, or help me purchase

belt drive was a variable speed belt pulley system that turned a chain drive shaft to axle 55 to 57, 58 and 59s belt driven transmission like the newer horses.actually look close at front axle to make sure its straight, not alot of difference between 58,59 rjs and 60,61 suburbans.

Allright, that'll help very much, I've not yet seen trans and didn't know how any RJ's axel power derived other than "pure" belt to gear to axel. I don't think he's trying to bambosal me, just think he say some number on unit somewhere thinkin' it to be '51. Just can;t stand waitin' to see all parts, :woohoo:

Great that is excellent identifier as he says is all apart (tran intact) rest scatered trough his dad's shop and as soon as I get to see some I'll get some pics for certain, if he ever gets stuff together. Apparently he doesn't want me in dad's shop where other tractors are kept, hum!!!

Went by garage where owner has hood and got pic, reminds me of 551, especially since owner is adamant that it is 1951. Told him a 551 was 1961, which he didn't care to hear. He doesn't know hp of engine if has, but confirmed trans is gears not, chain-sprocket. Anyway Tue PM he's sp'osed to go to shop of dad's and he and his mother MAY get to round up parts that she can find.

If the hood has no slots in the front it is from a 1961 701, otherwise it is from 1962-1963.  The "notch" at the rear of the tank fits around the aluminum gas tank that was started in 1961.

That hood is not for a Sububan nut roaster... as said above its for a 701 or 702. The slots will tell you the year.

 

Now a 701 or 702 score is not bad at all!

scroll down to under Photo Gallery (forum section  #21) to see them.

 

Everyone can (and should) post photos of their horses, especially if close to original.

Thanks, have perused though nearly all with the "oldies" to get the initial concensus, but the expertise lead me to decision not a 551, but more than likely a 701. The help here is so great I knew some eye would know a detail I couldn't. All these wonderful photos are so great, every supplier did a great job, absolutely amazed at the resto... talent.

Hard to see in the photos on RS, but the 1961 #701 was the only IVORY plastic dash ever for Wheel Horse, until the black ones started in use the late 60's.
Basically all the original Ivory dashes failed (cracked, shrunk away from mounting screws, dried out, browned and fell apart), so WH stayed with metal dashes until the quality of plastics got better (UV resistance).
Here's a close up of the dash that we have reproduced in stable Epoxy, the front is identical to the original, the back was thickened.

A few years ago, one member loaned me an original NOS (New Original Stock) 701 Dash he had found and bought at a Dealership, from that one I was able to reproduce these for all of us, almost 100 restored #701 tractors now with this new dash plate.

Thanks all ya'll for your help, looks as if owner was insulted when I said it wasn't a 1951 tractor, I wasn't sarcastic either. But he changed tel no and when I got new number wouldn't return call. Guess I learned too much, just wasn't meant to be and I'll keep my nose on the trail. Great job you guys did teachin' me the suttle and not so suttle differences in the early hosses!
