No spark on Electro-12 HELP

Recommended Posts

formariz

Went to start my Electro12 this morning and no spark. It has a Kohler 301 with a breakerless ignition. From my research it could be a variety of things for which I am not equiped to test. Repacing all the main components is not cheap either. Some available components such as the regulater although with correct part numbers vary so much in price and size that I am not sure what to get. Checked for broken wires and some were in bad shape but not broken. Any help and or suggestions will be greatly apreciated.

When mine went, it turned out to be the "trigger switch" behind the flywheel. Hard to find it or the coil and exspensive. I don't know how to test for it. I got lucky and got one reasonable on ebay. A lot of guys change them over to points. I'm sure someone else will chime in. Good luck

My brother in law has an old economy tractor with the old 14 hp "k" series Kohler that had the 2 piece electronic ignition. When one of the components went bad he could not find it available anywhere. He converted his back to points cause (at that time) everything was available thru Kohler and aftermarket sources to support the old "points" style ignition. Good Luck friend!!!!!!

Some test to run.  Click to enlarge or download the K series service manual.

So I was able to test the coil and the trigger and the trigger tests faulty. I was lucky to find one on eBay at a "discount", $74.00 as opposed to the regular $150.00 if you are lucky to find them . Meanwhile while I wait for it since the wiring was pretty worn out I am rewiring the entire tractor. Thanks for the help.

Got the new trigger brand new in box stick it in and no spark. wiring is all new. Is it possible that regulater is causing this? One of the terminals was pretty badly burn't and had melted the wire connector insulation. Could it be the unit inside flywheel?

The stator on your machine has two sections.  One generates AC voltage to feed the regulator.  The other part generates the ignition spark.

So yes it could be your problem. Does the battery charging (regualtor feed) part of your stator pass the static tests (should have continuity with very low resistance between the 2 leads.  Also check each lead to ground should not be any continuity there.

If that part of your stator is bad then there is a chance the ignition coil part is bad also.  I will have to look in the manuals later to see if there is a test for ignition part of the stator

Edit:  Couldn't find test procedure for ignition part of the stator.  Manual warns that the ignition windings are fragile.

his is a cut and paste from teh manula...I do not know why it is so messed up???

The 1gmtion ClTCUltS are descrtbed tn the foregomg sechon. The stator
used wtth the battery type tgnition ClrcUJt has 18 posts but only 16 are wound. On breakerless tgmtlOn
ctrcUJts, these two extra posts are wound to provtde energy for tgmtton. The 1gmt10n wtndtng on the
breakerless ctrcutts are of very thin wtre wh1ch lS covered by an epoxy--be careful when mstalltng the
flywheel not to touch the sharp •edges agamst the wires as they can be easlly cut m sp1te of the protecttve
cover1ng.
