badbowtie 0 #1 Posted August 5, 2008 I bought some fenders and a toolbox for my Suburban "sight unseen". The holes in the fenders are probably 5/16 at roughly 4" or 5" centers and the holes on the toolbox are like 3/8" at more like 6" or 7" centers (dont know the exact measurments without going back out and checking). so which should I redrill and refill? One or the other (possibly both) is wrong. Im leaning toward redrilling the box because its pitted alot worse than the fenders and being thicker material will be easier to weld the unused holes shut. I also am planning on putting roll on bed liner inside the toolbox anyway any advice would be appreciated
linen beige 15 #2 Posted August 5, 2008 Post some pics if you can. WH used two different transmissions in '61. The fenders and toolboxes from 1960 work with the 1961 model 401. This toolbox is level across the top and the fenders are smooth and are made from metal which is thicker than the hood. These don't bend easily. The 1961 models 551 and 701 used a newer style. This toolbox has triangular "wings' on the corners that also attach to the fenders. The fenders have beads rolled into them dividing them roughly into thirds, and are made from the thinner metal such as that used for the hood. They bend pretty easily. The fenders from one style won't match up with the toolbox from the other.
badbowtie 0 #3 Posted August 6, 2008 my toolbox is flat across the top and alot thicker than the fenders which are roughly 16 gauge maybe 14 at the very heaviest and dont have any beads rolled in them. The toolbox is probably 11 gauge ( just a hair under 1/8" thick) could possibly be 10 gauge even.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #4 Posted August 6, 2008 Here's a LINK to a picture of one of my old 551's. They use the same toolbox and fenders as the other mid-engined tractors. B)

linen beige 15 #6 Posted August 6, 2008 Here's a LINK to a picture of one of my old 551's. They use the same toolbox and fenders as the other mid-engined tractors. Thanks for the reminder there TT! I forgot that the 551 used the new tranny but kept the old fenders. :imstupid:
badbowtie 0 #7 Posted August 6, 2008 thanks for the pics, my tool box looks like the one in the bottom picture but it doesnt have those posts on the corners. the corrogation in the bottom is the same though and the bolt holes look like the one in the top picture as does the fenders. I noticed a small hole on the fender behind the toolbox that could be just like mine if there is another one a few inches forward of that one. Also I have the 3 piece rearend.
