Oil leak! Advice before I tear into it?

Recommended Posts

I just went out today to clean up the 520h--it's been sitting in the garage for about a month now. I noticed this oil leak. Looks like a lot? Rest of motor stays pretty clean but i generally don't look behind the PTO. I'm not sure how long it's been building up, but I check the oil before every start and it's been ok? I'm thinking its gonna need a bearing plate gasket and/ or a welch plug. Any advice before I proceed would be much appreciated. I am not looking forward to it!

I'm guessing that the seal in that bearing plate is leaking.

Onans pump so much air from the flywheel that a little leak makes a big mess.

Might be worth your while to clean it all off with some brake-clean, and run it again to see if you can pinpoint the leak before blindly pulling it all apart.

That's great advice--I'm going to do just that this week sometime. It seems putting that oil seal in is a little bit of a job.

I just looked at an Onan bearing plate and the seal does install from the outer side.

There is a crank bearing (white metal type) just inside of that (also in the bearing plate), so I would just remove the pulley and woodruff key, and carefully pry out the old seal (without driving your screwdriver into the bearing!) and install the new one
