Machria 78 #1 Posted February 16, 2013 Hey guys, Anyone rebuild carbs around here? I'll take it off and ship it to you, if you rebuild for $. Just got a GT14, my first tractor. It's running and I gave it a quick tuneup, but I think the carb needs redone and that is above my payscale. I changed plug, oil, fresh fuel, ran thru some Seafoam, changed fuel finler and fuel lines. From what I can make of it, it's a Kohler Adjustable Jet carb. That's what is seems to look like when I compare it to the service manual. PM or email me if interested in rebuilding my carb! Here a few pics of it:
JackC 617 #2 Posted February 16, 2013 Brian Miller will do it: http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/a1carb.htm
Trouty56 567 #3 Posted February 16, 2013 Give it a shot and see.....you might surprise yourself......we all learned that way.....If you can take it off you've done the hardest part.
Kelly 1,033 #4 Posted February 16, 2013 If you don't want to do it, send me a PM, I can rebuild it with throttle shaft bushings and all, I only use Kohler rebuild kits, and will send new a gasket to mount it back to the block, I can also supply new fuel line and fuel filter, for a little extra. Ken B 3,189 #5 Posted February 16, 2013 Grab the throttle shaft on top of the carb and see how much slop is in it when you rock it back and forth. If there is a lot of slop there you can rebuild that carb all you want it still won't run right until you correct that issue. Maybe not something for an absolute amateur but not too difficult. If that is tight rebuilding the carb is fairly simple with some guidance. You can do it.
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #6 Posted February 16, 2013 Yes, its all hinging on the wear of the bushings. Really if there is any movement in the throttle shaft air can get by and make the engine want to run lean. Its really good to have a carb thats all in spec and fresh. Machria 78 #7 Posted February 16, 2013 I can't really tell if the throttle shaft (the red screw in my first pic, right?) is loose inside, because it is loose on top. Part #1 in pic below slides on part #2 if I try twisting part #1. I don't think that is supposed to happen, right? Should I just tighten down the red screw, or? I don't know, there are alot of springs and small parts in this thing. If I take it apart, I have a feeling it will either never go back together OR after I put it together there will be 2 or 3 parts leftover somehow and it will never work again. I'm fine paying somebody to do it that knows what they are doing, as long as I'm not wasting my time and money. I'm also worried I can get the lingages installed back on correctly... ? Wheel-N-It 2,976 #8 Posted February 16, 2013 Something tells me you should send it to Kelly............................... Give him a PM
puddlejumper 67 #9 Posted February 16, 2013 Kinda looks like there might have been some shadetree ingenuity on that throttle shaft allready. If it wasnt for that I would say go for it. But maybe you should let somebody else look at this one.
Machria 78 #10 Posted February 17, 2013 "shadetree"? Anyway, I did contact kelly and checked out the Brian site. Thansk guys. At this point, I have it running pretty decent, but I think the linkages need more work than the carb. Everything is loosey goosey, the springs aren't doing much, the throttle can be jiggled around.... Any suggestions on how to handle that? I looked at them, and I don't think I know enough about it to work on them. Can I bring the thing to any local mower repair type shop to fix/replace/work on the lingages, or are they going to hack it all up?
