Toro 724Z wheelhorse inherited

I've inherited a Toro Pro-line 724Z Model#74140 with a power plus 24 motor and 60" mow. I've used it for 1.5 seasons but do not wish to keep it any longer. I had no idea when googling that there could be a forum for them! Can anyone tell me what it might be worth or if anyone has any interest in it? I do not see a date of manufacture but guess it to be 1987-1990. B)

From the Toro MPV it looks like that model would be built from 93-96. In 97 the chain drive 724 was replaced by the 222Z, a direct drive version of the 724, but it only lasted a year before a complete new model was brought in from Exmark.

I am not sure how the prices have been holding up on the older Zero turns. The mowers condition and hours will vary the price. Maybe someone else has a ballpark number for you. I'll try to remember to ask my brother what his shop generally asks for them.

If someone is interested in your Z it might help to know the state your in.

Thanks. Every little bit helps. I don't believe the hours counter works, I think it is at 922. I'd say the machine is in fair to average condition; mows alright by me but the platform is rusted and bent a little. I'm in the Plymouth, Michigan area folks, if you are interested or can offer some advice.

believe it or not, these tractors sold for around $10k when new!

The used values on these things seems to be all over the place according to those I have watched sell on eBay. Seems like a "user" like yours with the 60" deck brings anywhere from $800 to $1800. I have two, one I bought (and have since parted out) with a blown engine for $225. My other was $800 but had a blown transmssion on one side that I scavenged from unit #1. It was otherwise in very good shape. Units with the 50" deck seem to bring a couple hundred less since I think they are less appealing thus equipped. So, with the new tires I put on recently, I have about $1200 in mine.

Compared to new machines, these chain drive Dixie Chopper knockoffs are very primative. They do work sufficiently well, but can't keep up with the newer Toro/Exmark designs.

If want to sell it, I suggest putting it on Ebay with a starting bid of around $1000 (I don't need a thrid one since I have to now repair the other transmission in mine ). If you don't sell it within the next few weeks, you might want to wait again until spring since the demand for this stuff is very seasonal.

I'm not an expert on these monsters by any account. They do perform admirably but even when new would require regular repair and adjustment. In fact, in BS'ing with Ed Cole (Toro rep) at the show this year he said they figured about 2 hours of tinkering were required on these things weekly for the commercial cutters.

The 24 Onan on these churns out a LOT of power, but really sucks the gas as you probably know. Good engine though and if you were to part the tractor out this is your high-dollar piece as the rest of the machine is not very marketable. Replacement Onans are no longer available new, but smallenginewarehouse.com has a 24 Honda kit that looks pretty promising.
