According to the Wheel Horse Tractor Master Model List, the 1-0356, 1974 C-120 8-speed, was originally powered with a Kohler K301.

Oh, by the way, :WRS:

I'm going to say it is original, but the numbers are a little weird. It is a 1974, but the 1-0356, which is an 8 speed, should have a Kohler K301S 12 hsp. The Tecumsah HH120-120180D 12 hsp came on the Automatic #1-0495...also a C-120 1974. Maybe TT can shed some light on this one. Nice horse though. :)

Thanks for the input thus far.... I thouggt it should have a 301... the tecumseh sticker and the fact that the wiring harness doesn't look spliced is throwing me off. Guess I might have to pull the 301 out of the 67 cub when resto time gets here.

I believe if it came with a tecumseh it should be a c120 special

yea like rwilson said they made C120 special that ran a techy. a friend of mine has had 1 or 2 of them and they were both 8 speeds i figure it was a way to make and sell a cheaper wheel horse for the market

The serial number is supposed to yield date info. If so only decade is in question, but from rest of post maybe 74, followed by calendar day , and line/shift. Jan 08? Huh e shift, doesn't work out, E line maybe. Got this from 3 to 10hp so may be way off Edited by groundhog47

I have one of those I picked up a while back and it is a C-120 Special. Mine is an auto though. Seems I read that there was a shortage of Kohler 301's so they stuck the Tecumseh in there and labeled them C-120 Special.

Here are the number from the list

1-0357 1975 C Series Garden Tractor C-120 8-Speed Tecumseh HH120-120180D 12 Wheel Horse 5091

1-0375 1975 C Series Garden Tractor C-120 8-Speed Tecumseh HH120-120180D 12 Wheel Horse 5091

1-0395 1975 C Series Garden Tractor C-120 8-Speed Kohler K301S-47421D 12 Wheel Horse 5091

1-0396 1975 C Series Garden Tractor C-120 8-Speed Kohler K301S-47421D 12 Wheel Horse 5091

1-0491 1975 C Series Garden Tractor C-120 Automatic Kohler K301S-47421D 12 Sundstrand 90-1136

My C-120 8spd had a Kohler and it was a 75. Maybe it is "Special" :ychain:

I had a C-120 auto 74 or 75 flip up fenders, with a tucky in it, guy bought it new that way, it's gone now, he parked it before a storm and lightning struck it, and it burned to the ground, I saved a few parts off it before going to the junk yard.
