fisherman 39 #1 Posted February 13, 2013 just got this the other day n have been talking to a few of you guys about it. it seems i stumbled on this by accident! i put an ad on craigslist in the barter section to trade my metal detector for a garden tractor. This is a 1985 416, got it without really knowing that alot of you people think this is a good model. it needs a few little things, like today i was looking at it and noticed that there was like an inch of play on both front axles! took wheels off and no bearings! went to dealer bought new ones and shims also. this is one heck of a tractor! and this is a cool site with friendly people and a wealth of info. Glad i traded the detector and joined up here! havent had time to clean it up got mud all over it! pics arent the best!
JackC 617 #2 Posted February 13, 2013 Great machine with the coveted big block Kohler and no Toro logos anywhere. Looks like it was taken care of and will clean up nicely and serve you well. A true Wheel Horse with the maroon decals. Nice.
IthacaJeff 151 #3 Posted February 13, 2013 Fisherman, Some would say you have the best of the best. Single cylinder Kohler, the 1 1/8' axles, 8 speed, and a solid looking rear discharge mower deck. (42"?). Welcome aboard, Jeff
Tankman 3,523 #4 Posted February 13, 2013 Looks like my '85 416-8 when I too stumbled upon it. I love this machine! I have a '88 414-8 but currently the 416 is my go to Stallion. Keep the forum upto date with your project Horse! The pictures in my gallery, Grandson plowin' snow, is the '85 416-8. I happen to be a fan of the Magnum's, but only because they're simple for a tyro like me to work on! That's a fine tractor you got there! It'll serve you well for a long time! Kevbo 81 #13 Posted February 14, 2013 Nice tractor bud! Looks very similar to my 414-8. The 416-8 is an extremely popular model and a very powerful one at that. :text-welcomewave:

Wheel-N-It 2,976 #15 Posted February 14, 2013 (edited) Welcome from North Carolina. I have 416-8 with the K-341. These are great tractors! Lots of power for their size. Like you, I stumbled upon mine. These are such great tractors that sooner or later almost every Wheel Horse guy either has one or wants one. Thats what happened to me. The K motors are nearly bulletproof. Don't let the old school contact points ignition worry you. Its a non issue. This is the best Wheel Horse site on the internet. Just stay here and absorb all the information available for your machine. Keep working on your 416, replacing worn parts, tuning the engine, greasing everything that moves, etc. Don't be afraid to take something apart to give it the attention it needs. We can walk you through getting it back together. If you do this, in one year you will be amazed what you have learned about your 416, and you will have a tractor that will easily last you 20 or more years. The one you see in my avatar is now almost 22 years old, and I see no reason why it will not go another 20 years. The engine has never been apart. Your word for today is "Maintenance" Edited February 14, 2013 by Wheel-N-It
Ken B 3,189 #16 Posted February 14, 2013 Nice find! I gave up a very nice 416-8 for my low hr 520 via trade. I really liked that 416-8 but I think I made a good choice. I like the pre-Magnums myself, mostly for old school reasons. Get her cleaned up and post some more pics.
dbartlett1958 99 #17 Posted February 14, 2013 I have a 416-H and someday would like to have the 416-8 to make a pair. The hydro trans is great, but there are times when the 8 speed would do a job better.
855ownerJoel 32 #18 Posted February 14, 2013 I have the 414-8 magnum and LOVE IT, both engines are good. I like the K series but it is pretty much the same quality engine just one needs point change occasionally and the other is magneto (no points) kinda nice. Make sure you do regular maintenance and that tractor will out-live any tractor out there. "My opinion". I have a Blower, Deck, and Tiller for mine. Enjoy that tractor. wallfish 18,190 #19 Posted February 14, 2013 You will find the 416-8 is capable of much more than just mowing your lawn and it can easily handle ALL of the ground engaging attachments out there. Add a snowblower or a push blade and you have a machine to use all year long. That's a 416-8 in my avatar pic.
