520-8 Dozer

Recommended Posts

Tankman

I have two dozer blades, both mounted on 400 series :wh:'s.

Can these dozer blades fit on the 520-8 that I'm restoring?

The '90 520-8 does have the swept forward axle.

I'm thinking, the five location (angling) bracket would be of use here.

Easy enough to drill additional holes in my existing brackets.

The thought is, angled at the extreme position, blade is close to the

front wheels on the 400's. I think at the extreme position, blade might

hit the 520's front tires. Just my thought. As mentioned above, easy

enough to drill the half-angle locating holes if I move a blade to

the 520.

I believe you will need a spacer to move the whole assembly forward from the rear axel. And a new bracket to attached the lift under the center of the tractor.

I'll be looking for them too!

You need the 520 blade extension kit. I think there is one on ebay now.

Are you sure there is enough space to drill 2 more holes in your 3 position blade?

(Maybe I didn't understand what you are wanting to do)

You will need "48 inch Snow Blade Adapter Kit. Look up Model 81640 on Toro's web site.

The semi-circle blade angle adjustment, has three holes. Typical on most.

Some had five holes. From the left, 1st hole and center 3rd hole.

Drill a hole (same Ø) center of the two. Repeat on the right side.

The semi-circle blade locator would be a five hole, five blade angles.

Using the two newly drilled holes to angle the blade would limit the

angle, blade wouldn't hit the wheels.

Just found the extension kit on eBay. Not bad price either.

Still restoring the '90 520-8 for a spring outing. Guess I'll have to

suffer through the snow usin' my 416-8 and its' 48" dozer.

Life isn't so bad as long as you get to ride a :wh: Stallion.

I thought you only needed the plow frame extension if you had the forward swept axle.

I thought you only needed the plow frame extension if you had the forward swept axle.

No drawings were available at Toro. Toro's website did say this extension was

for the '90 520. You're probably correct, extension for the forward swept axle.

Not sure but, wheel base w/o the swept axle is, on the 500's, same as the

400's. I am sure the width of the front axle is wider than my 400's.

Is Gene Autry or Mr. Hopalong Cassidy around to shed some thought on these :wh:'s?

I have never seen the blade pivot thingy with the 5 holes, so I might be completely wrong here, but I seem to remember reading or hearing that you couldnt just drill another pair of holes to achieve the same thing.

Something about the spacing being off, and to do it you needed to weld the existing holes and redrill. :scratchead:

You'll also need the spacer blocks for a 520-8. Part # 119840 from the 48" Blade Adapter Kit #81640. The kit is needed for all of the GTs with the “swept forward” cast axle, but the spacer blocks are used only on the 41-20o801, 520-8 for 1990 model year. Needed for clearance from the transaxle case when the frame is extended with the kit. They're mounted under the axle tubes to lower the rear hitch. They're just a hunk of steel, so if you have some scrap you can drill it and make do.

There are 3 parts to the kit needed to install a blade on a 520 with the swept axle, the rear extention mount, the center lift relocation mount, and the handle that is bent backwards to clear the PTO when angling the blade, as for the 3 and 5 hole index, I'm pretty sure a few years ago I looked and you can NOT drill the extra holes to make a 3 hole a 5 hole if you do it will leave very little material in between the holes, I know my 5 hole index in the last hole sets the blade on a tighter angle than my 3 hole index.

It will probably work at first but eventualy the holes start to wear and get larger....thats when the closeness of the holes will start to be an issue.

This is probably the wrong place to ask this, but can anyone comment on how useful the 5 hole adjustment really is?

I have only used blades with the 3 holes. I cant see me wanting to angle the blade any more than what the 3 hole blade allows me to do, and I'm not sure that angling the blade any less would do me any good either?

i have the 5 holes in several of my plows i like it. it is especially useful in wet heavy snow so not as to push the front around and it just gives you more options when plowing

I have got both a 3 and a 5 hole. I very seldom use the middle hole on the 5. I suppose it's a nice option but to go and drill a 3 hole out to me just is not worth it. As far as the 5 hole it does provide a little sharper on angle when in the outside hole but not enough difference compared to the 3 in my opinion.
