damon91 7 #1 Posted February 5, 2013 Hello all. I finally got a few pics up. I appreciate all the help over the last few months. Here's the question, I recently finished rebuilding my K181 which runs great. The new rod I installed was aftermarket from Napa. The rod cap bolts were installed and tight out of the box, I guess to prestretch everything. I installed the rod and torqued the rod cap bolts in two steps just like the kohler manual specifies, however the new rod did not come with the metal piece that goes under the bolt heads that you bend up against the head to lock the bolts in place so I did not install one. The engine has an hour or two of runtime on it allready and has been fine so far, but do you think I have to worry about the rod cap bolts working loose and blowing up the engine? Thanks Damon P.S. These are actual bolts not the studs with the one time use nuts (cant remember what their called)
rmaynard 16,349 #2 Posted February 5, 2013 My rebuilt K241 just uses the cap screws (hex head bolts) and no locks. Properly torqued, they should not need to be retorqued or checked again unless you have the pan off for some other reason.
sorekiwi 761 #3 Posted February 6, 2013 I'm in agreement with Bob here. Properly torqued the nuts should not come loose. But because I am paranoid, I use a dab of Blue Loctite to help me sleep at night.
