Zeek 2,286 #1 Posted January 27, 2013 I'm getting to the finishing stages of redoing my Kohler K301 12HP from my Raider 12. The guy that redid the engine internals recommended two things: the fuel pump should be replaced because the diaphragm is leaking. the Walbro carb that is on it should have the throttle rod bushing replaced due to excessive play and the likelihood that air will enter there and cause idling problems. It's my understanding that: There is no rebuild kit for the metal fuel pumps and they are replaced completely by the new plastic ones, and replacement bushings of the size needed for this carb are not available and I'm better off replacing the carb Does anyone know what route I should take to correct these problems? Having it done right is more important to me than the money. Any opinions would help. I'm not sure of the carb part number, but the guy that did the motor said he was unable to find bushings for the carb.

ericj 1,579 #5 Posted January 28, 2013 i took my kohler carbs to a friend of mine and he made new shafts for the on the lathe so...... if you know a good machinist they can be fixed eric j
jhunsch 20 #6 Posted January 29, 2013 Hope this will help. I had a bushing that fit the carb shaft, cut it to the right lenght. I then turned it down to fit in the collar of the carb. Works very good for a about 50 cents. There will almost always be some air slipping by the bushing. Jeff
Anglo Traction 761 #7 Posted January 29, 2013 (edited) Sorry Zeek, your too far away for me to help with any Lathe work!!!. Look's like you have plenty of help there anyway. I have resorted to making my own Throttle/Choke Plate screws. too expensive to buy and no bulk supplier in UK. rmaynard 16,290 #9 Posted January 29, 2013 Zeek, Before buying a fuel pump kit, take the pump apart. Some pumps are not worth fixing, and the $30 that you will spend on the kit will be better spent on a new pump. I have rebuilt two pumps with the kit mentioned, both were different, and one took me longer to do than the pump was worth. I had to modify the parts in the kit, and the corroded inside of the pump took hours to make usable. However, it your pump is working but leaking. you may have any easier time than I did. If you have any question, give me a call. If you don't have my number any longer just PM me. Bob
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #10 Posted January 30, 2013 Zeek, I just bought a new fuel pump at NAPA for $38.50 including tax. Yes its plastic but It works great. The NAPA part number is 7-08011
rmaynard 16,290 #11 Posted January 30, 2013 Dittos on the plastic pump from NAPA. It does have the goofy plastic fittings that have to be installed using their included "tool", but otherwise it is just fine. The repair kits from Maritime are $22.00 plus $8.00 shipping. For the extra $8.50 I think the plastic pump is a deal. That is unless you are going for the "all original" look.
Zeek 2,286 #12 Posted February 1, 2013 I was sort of going for the original look. I tore the pump apart and it looked pretty good. Under normal circumstances I would just buy a new one and be done with it, but I want to glass bead the aluminum one for a cool look. I'll see how it works. If I end up having a problem later like gasket seepage, I'll be dumping it for a new one. As far as the carb, I sent it off to Brian yesterday. I don't have the appropriate equipment or know anyone nearby to do it. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll let you know my opinion when they are all done.
