Last thing. How do I become a "Dysfunctional "D" family member Is it a simple matter of ownership? Does my bloody knuckle get me in the gang? Is there some sort of hazing ceremony? What if want to get out? Am I stuck in it for life?

I have also lined up a friend's husband who is going to get the motor running for me. He specializes is boreing and re-sleeving motorcycle engines so I think he will be able to get it going. He could replace pistons and rings if I need it, too. I only had 30psi on one side, 90 on the other. I don't know if results are accurate when you just turn the motor over by hand, though. We shall see.........

Thanx for the update Scott.  So it was the drive gear all along?  What goes bad with them?

15Deg is plenty cold, I don't do much with my tractors this time of year.  I am waiting till the spring gets here to install a new exhaust valve.  I really don't feel like going out the the shed and getting dirty in the cold.

No need for hazing to join the dysfunctional family.  I think you've proven yourself already.  I think you just need to edit your 'Member Title' in your general account settings.

Welcome to the family!

Hey Scott

Welcome to the 'family'! As James said there's no hazing and it's about owning one and trying to make it function as intended - not always easy -  but we share what we learn as we go along.

I seem to recall that you have to make a certain number of posts before you can access the option to change what it says above your avatar. It's not a D family rule its set by the forum.

ps Hopefully picking up another D at the weekend.

What if want to get out? Am I stuck in it for life?

Hmm... I believe there's no known cure for horse bite :)

Scott.  Look up the Service Manual for your D and it will show you how to adjust the PTO and give you a run down on the parts that you might need. When I got my D200 the PTO was toast and was in the 'ON POSITION' at all times. It was costly for the parts to repair and hopefully yours will only need adjustment. Good Luck.

Bitten,

I think I'm actually just going to pull the belt for now. I don't even have the motor going yet and also don't have any PTO implements, anyway. I'm glad it's on there, though. I also need a PTO handle. Seems hard to find implenets for that high RPM shaft. Is there a way to use different pulleys to bring the speed down? I'd love to get some sort of 3-point, PTO driven log splitter in the future. I'm guessing it will have to be home built or modified. I'll keep the updates coming. It seems you can find most parts online - you just have to pay!

I think a lot of us are looking for that too.  If you figure out a way to drop the RPM so that it is compatible with the majority of the implements, I'd love to hear it.

Yeah, doing quick math and assuming the drive pulley is about 4", which I don't even know if it is, the driven pulley would have to be more than 2'in diameter to get to 540 RPM. I'm sure it's been done with a third shaft welded on somewhere with two more pulleys, reducing it more. Anyway, I still have to get the motor running in the first place! I'm getting waaayyyy ahead of myself and my abilities, not to mention my facilities!

The PTO speed issue (and possible solutions) has been discussed before see

My thinking  goes along these lines - chain and sprockets. It's only at the dreaming about it stage at present but it's good to think ideas through with others on a forum like RS even if its on the basis of maybe oneday I'll get round to it.

Here in the UK Cat 0 implements are pretty much non-existant beyond things purchased at the time with tractors like the D. Add to that speed issue and options even for adapting things are strictly limited. So for stationary implements e,g, log splitter a chain drive redction unit coupled to the rear PTO could also have CAT 1 output coupling which is standard here for Compact Tractors offering a much wider availability of what could be driven. With my basic fab skills and standard parts it's in the realms of possibility - just.

There's also the possibility of modifying the front PTO drive arrangement to use a chain rather than belt to drive the PTO shaft. Small sprocket on the engine shaft (smaller than existing pulley), large sprocket on the PTO shaft. This would obviously mean major modification to the PTO clutch assembly which is probably beyond my skills but in theory possible I would have thought.

Good luck with getting the engine going - it should be possible to get it to at least run even if it does need a rebuild. Keep us posted on progress.

That is a bad thing about the PTO on these things, the speed of it. I have a tiller for mine and that is the only thing that I use the PTO for. I have things I use the 3 point for that I have bought and that I have made.

might be able to look at the gear box of a tiller or a finish mower and get an idea on how to make your own gear reduction. IDK just a thought.
