M16S STARTER

Will a starter from a M16S spec 711522 fit a M16S spec 711523 engine? I just purchased one and compared them and the nose on the purchased starter is shorter.

There's a before/after serial number break @ 2235000013 for the starter but I don't know the difference.

Is the length of the shaft sticking out beyond the drive gear different on the two you have?

I don't have mine out of the tractor yet. I planned on doing it in the spring. I don't use it in winter.

Mine has a cast aluminum ribbed cone on the end where as the replacement has no cone on the end. The motor housings are the same length. Looks like this weekend I am going to pull the old one a compare them side by side.

The "cast aluminum ribbed cone" is part of the bearing (crankcase closure) plate on a Magnum single.

You have to be extremely careful when loosening the bolts that hold the starter to the bearing plate as they twist off easily. The starter can also "fall apart" once it's unbolted.

You will more than likely have to remove the dipstick tube from the engine block ~ which is made much easier by removing the drive belt guard from the right side of the tractor.

I highly recommend purchasing a new gasket for the dipstick tube just in case the old one tears.
