welderman85 53 #1 Posted January 9, 2013 i have a c-85 that could use a little more power. A guy i work with has a 14hp vanguard with it around 100 hours on it. i can get for 300.00 would this have enough to run a single stage blower? Would this make a good swap? Is 300.00 fair i trust the guy and have known him for a long so it has been well cared for ? thanks

wh5208speed 646 #3 Posted January 9, 2013 If the motor is in good running order, it should do a great job on a single stage blower Thad
Don1977 605 #4 Posted January 9, 2013 I up graded to a 18 HP Briggs & Stratton Vanguard in 2010. I first had a 16 HP Vanguard that I installed in 1990 . Mine is in a 1977 C-120 and it's a tight fit. You will have more room with the C-85. Locate the crank shaft in the same as the Kohler and every thing will bolt back up. If you have any questions PM me and I will answer them. TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #5 Posted January 9, 2013 I have a question for you, Don...... The Vanguards have ball bearing on both ends of the crank. I haven't had any trouble with the manual clutch. Where did you find a Vanguard twin with a bearing on the flywheel side? I've had several apart and have yet to find one. :confusion-shrug:
littleredrider 409 #6 Posted January 9, 2013 I have a 13 horse clone on my ranger, and easily blows snow with a 32" (36" with wings). I want to get a bigger one, but since we got some snow there isn't many for sale at a decent price...
Don1977 605 #7 Posted January 9, 2013 You are right I pulled the parts manual and checked It doesn't have one on the fly wheel side. I had it apart several times because of the broken mounting tab but that has been a long time ago. I have a question for you, Don...... The Vanguards have ball bearing on both ends of the crank. TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #8 Posted January 10, 2013 That's why I have been dragging my feet on installing my 18hp Vanguard on my GT-1848. When I had it on the C-85 I used a GT-1142 drive pulley with the thrust bearing and the backer plate, but the 1848 needs a 5 1/4" engine pulley. The pulley off of the opposed twin is not machined for the thrust bearing, so I guess I'll just have to risk it for now.
Don1977 605 #9 Posted January 10, 2013 I ran my 16 for 20 years with out a trust bearing and don't have one on the 18. What killed my 16 was the broken block. ( broke the right front corner and mounting tab off) had it welded but never stopped it from seeping oil. We never got all the cracks and it opening one up and dumped the oil and was knocking before I noticed it. This was 12 years or so after I broke it. The way the base is design on those Vanguard leaves a lot to be desired. That why I have a 3/8" thick plate below the engine. I don't think a cast iron Kohler block would have broken where I broke the Vanguard.
welderman85 53 #10 Posted January 10, 2013 kinda a stupid question i think the 14hp vagaurd has a 1" shaft so could i use a workhorse pto clutch also would useing the rubber mount work or should i hard mount it. thanks
Kelly 1,033 #11 Posted January 10, 2013 Being a C-85 you have all the parts you need if the Vangaurd is a 1" crank, the 8hp kohler in the C-85 is a 1" crank, so the PTO bushing and the drive pulley will fit right on, biggest thing will be if the upper PTO bracket will fit the engine, if not let me know I have a few here and they all don't have the same bolt pattern, can't say if the shaker plate will or will not work, you would have to see if it sets the engine at the right height
jay in nc 210 #12 Posted January 10, 2013 i think you are on the right track using the workhorse 800 electric clutch. mowed 18 in. high grass for several hours last sat. with the one i have in the classifieds. never missed a beat. Jay
Don1977 605 #13 Posted January 10, 2013 The C-85 should have a 1" shaft. You need to measure the location of the existing crank shaft and put the new one in the same location to use the same belts. Don't know about your PTO bracket but one from a 10 thru 16 K style Kohler will bolt on. I had to use a couple of washers behind mine. I used the loop and brackets from my C-120. This is how I mounted mine. with a 3/8" plate and 2" x1/2" spacers. I'm not sure what you need to get the right height.
ericj 1,579 #14 Posted January 14, 2013 the v twins i have heard really sound good especially through straight pipes, but do they the same or better power than a K321 ? an how is the fuel consumption ? eric
