WheelHorse_of_course 99 #1 Posted December 29, 2012 Hey Folks, As mentioned previously, I bought a 520H minus dashboard and engine. This is going to be my Dirt Tractor for use with ground engaging equipment since the hydraulic lift will be easier. I was disappointed it does not have a rear slot hitch or lift cable, but oh well . This does NOT have forward swept front axles. Oddly however, I can find no serial number label! I thought I'd find it on the left side of the tower, but there is a dealer sticker there instead. Maybe the dealer put their dealer on top of the WH ID sticker? Let me know what you think about where the sticker should be, or a best guess at the year or ID number. I want to know the ID number so I get manuals and parts list. Thsnks folks
Sparky-(Admin) 23,158 #2 Posted December 29, 2012 It doesnt say TORO anywhere so its an 88 or 89. I think the model# was on a decal on the fender pan....and you dont have the original fender pan. Mike..........

WheelHorse_of_course 99 #5 Posted December 30, 2012 Thanks Guys!Odds are this will end up a "512" or "510" since gas is way to much for me to own a 520!
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #6 Posted December 30, 2012 That is going to be a great project! Have you given thought to installing a diesel engine? The reason I am asking is because I have a 520H with the swept forward axle, and I have some plans for it on the drawing board now with it having a diesel for a powerplant. I was originally thinking about the one cylinder diesel but I really like what Kelly is doing with a V-twin diesel. You should check out his thread.
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #7 Posted December 30, 2012 This, like all my projects, is a "poor boy" project. My engine budget is $100-125 ! However there is one possibility - my neighbor has a single cylinder diesel that he has no use for. I have been hoping to run into him and ask him if he'd be willing to sell it. I have no idea the HP but it is fairly small. But since I won't be using the PTO for anything I don't think I need all that much HP. I know the torque to HP ratio is much higher in a diesel so I'd be willing to try almost anything! Otherwise I have guy who says he can dig me up a 10-12 HP engine in my price range. I have no inside work space so nothing much will happen until springtime, other than collecting parts. Wish me luck. CheersRolf
HorseFixer 2,013 #8 Posted December 30, 2012 Hey Rolf that thing would look good with a 16hp Big Block in it! ~Duke
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #9 Posted December 30, 2012 Duke, Yes, that would look better than an Onan in my book!
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #10 Posted December 30, 2012 OK, now that I have a parts list.... The belt guard is part number 114877 . I suspect this is the same as (e.g. cross references to) Hydro Tractors all the way back to the C series. Can anyone confirm this? I am also looking for the correct part number for the "kit" with the slot hitch and cable. Actually the main thing would be the part number for the correct lift cable. I may very well make one, but buying one is an option. Thanks
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #11 Posted December 31, 2012 Awesome news. Neighbor says I can have the diesel for $20. I have to check and make sure it isn't a tapered shaft. If it isn't I can make it work somehow! It's supposed to be about 10 HP. I should get a closer look at it later this week. One downside is it is a pull start, but I consider that to be OK (the Suburban's had pull starts)! I'll post pics when I have them.
Sparky-(Admin) 23,158 #12 Posted January 1, 2013 WOW! $20 bucks for a diesel? Nice deal. The real advantage to the yank start will be that you wont have to "fabricate" a wiring harness and go thru the headache associated with it. Good luck with the crankshaft....hope its straight. The motor wasn't a genset motor was it? They tend to be tapered. Mike...........
roscoemi 245 #13 Posted January 1, 2013 Buy it and trade it if you need to? :eusa-think:
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #14 Posted January 1, 2013 Buy it and trade it if you need to? Yep that's the worst case. My neighbor could not remember what it came from. I think he got is because it was too good to pass on. When I was a kid someone in the neighborhood had a 5 HP tapered shaft engine they were trying to use for a mini bike. I came up with the idea that they should drill holes for the clutch set screws and it worked!
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #15 Posted January 1, 2013 Sparky, Actually the electrical stuff is my specialty. Last night I dreaming about putting a starter generator on the diesel! For real dirt stuff I don't need lights, but this will probably become my snow plow tractor and since I plow the street I like to be lit up. We shall see, this project has barely begun. Happy New Year everybody!!!
