Parking break issue

Recommended Posts

So on my C-81 the parking break does not engage. The lever does not seem to fit in the break bracket. How would I adjust it to make the break work?

All that is there is a metal stop that lifts up when you move lever and has several little cuts or steps to lock. YOU DO have to push brake pedal pretty hard sometimes to get clearance for metal to move behind linkage and "bite". Then to release is a spring on that same metal that just pulls the arm back away from the stop when you release pressue on it by stepping on brake again. If the lever outside of tunnel springs back while setting and "playin' with it, spring should be good. Not sure there IS any adjustment on it??

Thanks grumpy I'll have to try pressing harder on the break and check out the spring. I do think it is a clearance problem.

I'm not an expert, but I had a simlar problem with a similar setup on my c-125. The prolem was that it had been adjusted to the point that even with the brake pedal depressed as far as it would go, the lever wasn't able to catch any of the teeth. You can see this action by removing the cover that is over the gear shift and parking brake levers. Solution was to back off the adjustment nut (located on the brake band on the left axle) until there was sufficient movement to catch the first tooth. I'm not sure I have it optimized yet, but it is in working condition.

Yep I had same problem with my 414-8, the brake band was wore so far that the adjustment on the rod was over compensated and in turn the brake lock wouldn't catch on the notches no mater how hard I pushed the pedal. Gotta brake down and just replace the brake band.HTH
