DIBNAH 17 #1 Posted December 27, 2012 Meet Widestride. Modified C120 for logging work over rough terrain. Agri tyres to go on and independant rear brakes. Holds its course on steep banks and steers good. Very stable tractor, pulls a 4x5 4 wheel trailer and soon to be log skidder. Deciding whether to put rubber fenders on all round or leave it as it is. When all mods have been made i will tear it down for paint. Can anyone recommend a reliable 12volt winch for the front.

Stigian 1,234 #7 Posted December 27, 2012 That's a cool machine, look forward to seeing the vids of it in action. How did you widen the rear track?
meadowfield 2,740 #8 Posted December 27, 2012 Ian, I reckon he used your method of extended rear hubs :)

Stigian 1,234 #10 Posted December 27, 2012 Ian, I reckon he used your method of extended rear hubs I reckon your right Richard I remember him posting some of the "Widestride" build picts in the gallery last week. Thanks for that Craig. I've just had a looksie through Dibnah's gallery pic's.. Dibnah..... Your my kind of engineer
DIBNAH 17 #11 Posted December 27, 2012 Hello Stigian, Meadowfield, Dual, Yes, much the same as Stigians but if you make the keyway cutter in a pair only half the width of the keyway ie one top and one bottom cutter you can take deeper cuts in one pass and this speed things up, dress keyway with fullsize cutter and your done. As Stigian knows its real enjoyable part of the job!. Resizing photos for these forums so you can see the full build. The rear hubs are a press fit to the shaft and welded, the hubs are built in rear weights.
neil 2,410 #12 Posted December 28, 2012 Thats just wicked, Have you increased the speed of the tractor in anyway? would love to see video of this working
DIBNAH 17 #13 Posted December 28, 2012 Thanks Neil, Not done anything with the speed yet as that will be done when I tear it down- the plan is to add a second gearbox/clutch behind the engine and chain drive down to normal g/box, not for speed but for torque. Placing both boxes in first and selecting low box gives you something thats hard to credit in such a small machine. Of course if you stick it fourth and fourth and high gives you something Top gear might try!. My workhorse 700 already has this set up and as a working tractor ( landscaping- ploughing- trailer work) it s great, but logging is a different ballgame in boggy woods and steep slopes. fireman 1,022 #14 Posted December 28, 2012 That thing is SWEET! I love the look of it. Looks mean!
JC 1965 1,532 #15 Posted December 28, 2012 I don't understand how you extended the rear wheels out like that and can't tell by the picture how you have the front end set up. also, what size wheels and tires do you have front and rear ? I would like to see more pics becauce I really like the look. I have an old Raider 12 that I've been wanting to do something with and this looks very interesting. Great Job !! :notworthy:
DIBNAH 17 #16 Posted December 28, 2012 Thanks, I will put on full build pics as soon as I can and will be more than happy to explain them, getting jammed up with private messages and emails about this so you will have to bear with me, go to my album for more pics Regards Dibnah. :)
Stormin 9,984 #17 Posted December 28, 2012 Dibnah, with regards a 12v winch, Champion seem to have a good reputation. Do you intend using the standard battery or fit a second one with split charge for winch only? I used to do off road challenges with my Land Rovers and used the two battery option. Stuck in a forest with a dead battery isn't much fun. How about a hydraulic winch? Drive the pump off the P.T.O.
neil 2,410 #18 Posted December 28, 2012 Seem like you are creating quite a bit of interest in this project of the wide stride horse i love the look of having the same size front wheels as is on the back i was thinking that a dozer blade would look great on your tractor and would also be very useful whilst out logging Do you intend to put ag tyres on the fronyt and back of the tractor ?
DIBNAH 17 #19 Posted December 29, 2012 You see, Thats why I like this forum,A blade on the front would be a cracking addition, could use a front mounted winch for lift and lowering- got me thinking now! :) not something I had thought of but will give it my full attention 4 new agri tyres are sat in the store to go on after painting. To answer Stormin's question dual batteries is the only way to to go, who are the agents for Champion winches?. The more I think about the blade the more sense that makes - if you can't go over the object or round it - move it!. :bow-blue:
312Hydro 474 #20 Posted December 29, 2012 Just found your build. That's some original thinking! I like the wide front axle and will also be watching your build. great work! Did you make the knuckles too? :handgestures-thumbupright:
DIBNAH 17 #21 Posted December 29, 2012 Hi Hydro, followed a few of your post too, yes all parts were made in my workshop and as i post build pics you will see that the work is not that special- you just need the tools to do it. If a pic doesnt make sense to you email me. regards Dibnah.
neil 2,410 #22 Posted December 29, 2012 (edited) Just a thought on installing a blade , If you install a blade where maybe the winch cable passes through the blade or over the top , you could fabicate some forks to slot ove the top of blade and then pull a log onto the forks and then you can actually move the log into a different place, by pulling the log with the winch onto the forks , By making the forks so they slot over the top of the blade, they can be removed when not being used Now if your winch was made to lift the blade , with the forks attatched you also get yourself a small fork lift to shift pallets around Just a thought Hope this is understandable and makes scense Edited December 29, 2012 by neil
DIBNAH 17 #23 Posted December 29, 2012 Makes perfect sense, and I have a set of forks. Im legging it down to the bottom store to measure up already! Keep em coming.
Stormin 9,984 #24 Posted December 29, 2012 A blade would be handy, but one thing to think about. Ground clearance under the tractor would be reduced by the frame. For a winch, Machine Mart sell Superwinch ones from £95 to £300. Have a look in a Land Rover mag or Google. I have a winch for my Land Rover which is demountable. Fits on front or back.
