Buckshot 1 15 #1 Posted December 15, 2012 :) Has anybody installed a relay on a tractor equiped with a starter/generator. To obtain full battery voltage on the starter side? :flags-usa:
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted December 15, 2012 Instead of having the battery and starter cables hook directly to the ignition switch?
sorekiwi 761 #3 Posted December 15, 2012 There are a few of us that have wired a solenoid into the starter generator system. Martin showed the details on one of his builds, I think it was the 1257?

steve k 82 #5 Posted December 16, 2012 Yes Buckshot. I just wired it up today on a commando 8 I am restoring and did not want the ignition switch to carry all the starting current. Only other modification I had to do was move the one generator light bulb wire from the crank/start terminal on the key switch to the post on the new solenoid that goes to the generator/starter. I bought the solenoid online for around 8-10 bucks.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,391 #6 Posted December 16, 2012 Wheel Horse did use a solenoid on the B&S powered 1974 A-90 Special with a starter/generator. You can see a poor wiring diagram at https://lookup3.toro...fm?xCaller=Toro The model number is 2-4300 and the diagram is on the electrical page. Garry Adding - managed to get a fair copy of the diagram. Go into the manuals here and do a search for 4300.
Buckshot 1 15 #7 Posted December 16, 2012 :) Thank you everyone for your replies. I should clarify what I am asking. This tractor all ready has a selonoid. But I wondering if anyone has installed a relay(like a headlight relay) to the starter side of a starter/generator. To obtain max battery voltage on the starter side. I have seen this done on tractors with starters other than s/g. As I do not want to take a chance of damaging to my s/g. Electrical work is not my best suit, but with a little help I can fiqure it out. :flags-usa:
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #8 Posted December 17, 2012 Could you explain what the relay is supposed to accomplish or why you believe one is needed? I've seen Ford-style solenoids added to GM vehicles with solenoid-shift starter motors, but that was a heat issue.
Don1977 604 #9 Posted December 17, 2012 It's just another way to get 12 volts or better to kick in the solenoid with out replacing old half worn out switches and bad connections. New key switch, and safety switches good connections, and wiring will do the same.
Buckshot 1 15 #10 Posted December 17, 2012 :) Like Don1977 stated to get 12v or more. With this tractor being 40 yrs old and never had a wiring up grade.(rewired) which will be done later on, in this coming spring and with the battery under the seat. I must be getting some resistance in the postive cable/the rest of the wiring in the starter curcuit Therefore not getting full battery voltage at the starter. Of course I am probably out in space on my way of thunk'n. :flags-usa:
