WheelHorseSteve 56 #1 Posted December 10, 2012 Hello -- I have an offer from a fellow out in Indiana to buy my K241 for sale. Has anyone ever shipped an engine? He is paying in advance... I just need to crate/box and get it shipped. Would you do UPS Ground? Freight? (somehow?) I have no idea what the options are outside of UPS and Fedex... Please advise! -Steve
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted December 10, 2012 I've never shipped an engine, but I will tell you that a complete K-241 exceeds 70lbs, which usually means truck freight.
bowtiebutler956 650 #3 Posted December 10, 2012 I have alot of expirience with shipping and recieving engines, and in my experience with them, UPS is hands down the best. The boxes always seem to arrive less beat up than if sent USPS, or Fedex. Make sure, and package it tight in the box, so it can't move around, and as heavy as Kohlers are, I would recomend a box in a box for added security. Kelly 1,033 #4 Posted December 10, 2012 I've shipped a few small Kohlers and Clintons (4hp) I bolted them to plywood and built a crate around them then boxed that up, it take me a hour to do that and a few $$ for the stuff to do it, Oh ya bag the engine tight, drain the oil, if they smell oil or gas it will not be shipped, I have used UPS all those times. Those small engine cost about $50 each to ship.
Ken B 3,189 #5 Posted December 10, 2012 This past week I shipped an engine to Rydogg exactly the way Kelly just described. He got it safe and sound.
rmaynard 16,348 #6 Posted December 10, 2012 I sent an 8 speed transmission by UPS from Maryland to New York. I made a wooden crate for it. UPS will delivery up to 150 lbs. It cost me around $90.00.
BOWTIE 226 #7 Posted December 10, 2012 I SHIP IT UPS GROUND ON HEAVY OR LARGE PARTS. A WOOD FRAME IS BEST OR TRIPLE BOX IT AND TIGHT SO IT WON'T SHIFT AROUND BECAUSE OF THE WEIGHT. THEY WILL SHIP OVER 70 POUNDS IT IS JUST COST MORE. TRY TO SHIP TO A COMMERCIAL ADDRESS IT'S IS CHEAPER. UPS FREIGHT GOES BY PALLET SIZE AND WEIGHT. VERY EXPENSIVE ON A SMALL ENGINE. WheelHorseSteve 56 #8 Posted December 10, 2012 Excellent feedback everyone! The guy has a 1972 Charger 10 in need of a K241 and I have some perfect wood to make a small crate out of it. Glad to know it will get another Horse back out of the stable! I'm going to give UPS Ground a try -- sounds great. Thanks all!! -Steve

boovuc 1,090 #10 Posted December 11, 2012 I would ship it LTL, (less than trailer-load), with a freight hauler. It would be cheaper and many offer shipments to residential with the use of a drop-gate. (No dock required). I had an Onan P220 20HP sent to our dock at work from Joe's Outdoor Power in Michigan about a year ago. We used R&L Freight for that bad boy. Mi to Central PA for over 130 lbs on a full size pallet was 112 bucks. That isn't a bad price and I think LTL is easier on freight than the many sorting facilities and truck changes that UPS or FedEx Ground would place on it. My two cents! PS..............My job is shipping parcels and haz-mat. I've been doing it for over 25 years. This shipment was personal so there was no corporate or business discount. 305 380 #11 Posted December 11, 2012 have you checked into using the bus? i have shipped fenders and other car parts by them with no problems and reasonable prices also, Fastenal will ship stuff for you on their trucks through their own distribution system store to store. it takes a while longer but is reasonable
WheelHorseSteve 56 #12 Posted December 13, 2012 So, it's shipped and on it's way to Rolling Prairie, IN... not far from where it likely originated! (that's right next to South Bend) It's neat to think about the trucks full of Wheel Horses rolling around America back in the day. I probably overbuilt the crate a little bit because it ended up pretty darn heavy. The engine alone -- w/ tins, starter, carb, air filter, coil, etc. -- weighed about 125 lbs. The total crated weight was about 165 lbs! Thankfully UPS took it for Ground shipping {under the banner of 150 lbs} because it was technically overweight. Bolted to the bottom of the crate via the oil pan and with some nice padding sandwiched in between (like a big bushing) I'm thinking it should do well -- will be curious to hear. Thanks again for all your advice! The C-100 is now a C-120... latest pictures to follow under a separate thread.
Kelly 1,033 #13 Posted December 13, 2012 just so we know, what did it cost to ship??
WheelHorseSteve 56 #14 Posted December 14, 2012 Residential to residential... 24"x24"x24"... "150 lbs" ... Newtown to the WH homeland via UPS Ground retail rate... $137. FedEx Ground would have been $122 but I liked UPS for the reasons cited earlier. I paid $9 to have it picked up from my driveway... My back felt that was $9 well spent. baerpath 517 #16 Posted December 16, 2012 I have a couple kohler engines in there original cardboard boxes, for shipping all they did was to bag the engine and use expanding foam simular to the stuff in a can you use to stop drafts.
WheelHorseSteve 56 #17 Posted December 16, 2012 Hope your family was not effected by the senseless that went on there in Newtown. Steve Thanks Steve. My children go to different schools in Newtown, but my 6 year old lost one of his best friends from when he was 4 (before she left the pre-school to attend Sandy Hook elementary). I know 3 of he victims... One other from his soccer team, another from 2-3 year old play dates. It's just awful...

When we get new kohlers they come exactly the same as stated above cardboard box and expanding foam packs.
