smoreau 658 #1 Posted December 9, 2012 I recently picked up a 312-8 that had been sitting in a storage unit for the last 10 years with what the previous owner said it had a blown engine. I am planning to put a older k301 on it and put it back to work. But yesterday i tore apart the m12. There was a huge mouse house in the blower housing. the engine would not turn over completely 1 revolution. The magnet was hitting the coil. after dis assembly I found a lot of mud between the coil mounting tab on the coil mount and the cooling fins on the block. It must have froze and bent the tab that is extremely corroded causing the engine not to turn over. The only other thing that I found was a bent exhaust valve. no marks on the head. How could this have happened? I pulled the crank, rod and piston witch showed little to know ware on the journals. I also noticed those nasty grenade thing's in there. I'm scrapping the block, tins, and carb as the throttle shaft broke off. So what I would like to know is are the crankshafts the same as a k301, they look the same. they all measure the same. I know the rods are the same. I know the bearing plate and flywheel are different. I would like to know so I can decide to save it or sell it.
rmaynard 15,964 #2 Posted December 9, 2012 What are the spec numbers on both the engines?
"D"- Man 827 #3 Posted December 9, 2012 I THINK I REMEMBER READING AN ARTICLE BRIAN MILLER (CUB CADETS ENTHUSIAST) POSTED ONLINE STATED THAT THE CRANKSHAFT AND MANY OTHER PARTS ARE ALL THE SAME BETWEEN THE K'S AND THE M'S. MARK.
smoreau 658 #4 Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) Here is the spec # for the magnum And the crank I compared it to was this The only difference I saw was the way the flywheel was held on. M12 has a bolt and the K301 is a nut. But will it work in a k301 without a issue? Edited December 9, 2012 by smoreau

MARK. This is what I am trying to find out. I will keep it if I can use it in a rebuild, but if not, flee bay bound
TT-(Moderator) 1,147 #6 Posted December 9, 2012 They will interchange - providing the PTO end is correct for your application. Many of the last K cranks also had the flywheel retaining bolt/washer.
rmaynard 15,964 #7 Posted December 9, 2012 I'm trying to find a definitive answer, but the K301-47814 shows up in the Kohler parts list as a Gravely. The replacement crank is 47 142 25-S. The M12-471527 shows as a Wheel Horse, and the part number is 45 142 21-S. I don't know what the difference is, but I have the Kohler crankshaft manual on my other computer and I will look it up. smoreau 658 #8 Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) Interesting as that was on a WH. Some one must have changed the sheet metal, and or the engine at some point They will interchange - providing the PTO end is correct for your application. Many of the last K cranks also had the flywheel retaining bolt/washer. So it should work as it was off of a WH Thank you Edited December 9, 2012 by smoreau
