richmondred01 2,307 #1 Posted December 8, 2012 I have a friend with a 417h that the engine that is blown. I have a c121 with a strong k301. Does anyone know what it would take to do the swap? Will the tractor be too under powered?
can whlvr 994 #2 Posted December 9, 2012 she wont have the power it had when the 17hp was in good shape,a 12 hp will power an eaton but its a little under powered,i have a 312-h with a brand new rebuilt 12 hp magnum,if thats all he has i would do it,for sure it will need to have the cradle installed with the 12 hp to keep the pto and drive pulley in the proper place,im fairly sure that the 417 were k,s not magnums so the wiring may be similar, someone else will know for sure, but it can be done
Racinbob 11,978 #3 Posted December 9, 2012 It would be pretty simple. I don't even think there would be much in the way of fabricating. Are you thinking of taking your engine off and putting it on his? And no, you wouldn't be underpowered. The k301 is one strong motor.
richmondred01 2,307 #4 Posted December 9, 2012 Will the cradle from the c121 fit on the frame of the 417 once the plate is removed. Will the wedges bolt in? . It would be pretty simple. can whlvr 994 #5 Posted December 9, 2012 i would think it will have the bolt holes for the cradle,if not they could be drilled,do you have both tractors to compare the holes in the frame,i have not worked on a 417,does the engine use a plate ?my 308 used a riser plate to make the pto correct height because its a small block,i wouldnt think the 17 needs a riser so im not sure what you mean by the plate or wedges, matbe you are refering to the rubber iso mounts?sorry my 101 is in storage so i cant look at the bolt hole configuration for the shaker plate, but i bet it will work with little effort
richmondred01 2,307 #6 Posted December 10, 2012 The 417 has a plate for the twin 17. The k301 uses a cradle and iso's. I have a striped down 520 and did some measurements it looks the the back cradle will mount with no drilling the fronts may be off a bit. It was raining so I will measure again. SALTYWRIGHT 861 #7 Posted December 10, 2012 I PUT A DIESEL IN MY 417-8 FOR $500.00. IT HAS MORE PULLING POWER THAN THE 17 THAT WAS IN IT. RUSS
jhs 0 #8 Posted December 11, 2012 hi i have a 79 c161 w / h 16hp briggs would a 18hp briggs fit in or do i have to do some modifing to make it work
Kelly 1,033 #9 Posted December 12, 2012 JHS, a 18hp should be a bolt in, just be sure the crank is the same diam. and you are talking the same style Briggs, I can't say a newer V twin will be a bolt in, they do fit just not sure what has to be done.
