MalMac 1,332 #1 Posted December 6, 2012 Was out on my tractor with the FEL on it this morning taking care of some chores when I heard the faintest of conversation of the balance gears asking to be relieved of their duty and where is the exit. So I shut it down and will accommodate them and relieve them of their duty's and show them the exit because I do not want them getting angry and storming off and creating their own exit. Sometimes you just gotta give into disgruntled employees and show them the door.

Anglo Traction 761 #6 Posted December 6, 2012 I left 'em out when I rebuilt my last k301 on the basis of advice I've read on here. Glad I did, easier build time and saved money. Runs just as smooth .
ericj 1,579 #7 Posted December 7, 2012 my old friend (he was 97 when he passed away in may) told me several years ago when he rebuilt my 1st 12 hp kohler take them out and and get ride of them. i didn't, it was only a quick rebuild rings and clean up so a year later when i had it bored and rebuilt it the right way you could see alot of additional ware on the balance gears and bearings so that time i listened and removed them andhave taken them out every motor since. i bought a 73 12 auto one time with a big vent hole above the starter but the crank was not hurt actually reused the crank in another moto ericr
smoreau 658 #8 Posted December 7, 2012 (edited) I have seen them come out and shoot across the yard on a old cub. The guy driving it had no clue what had happened and just thought he hit something in the yard as he was mowing near ware I was working on his satellite dish. It flew about 5 ft from the tractor and rolled up to my feet. He ran it for another 2 min. before I could get him to shut it down. The rod had a big gouge in it, but it ran fine except the very large hole in the block. At that time I had no clue what it was, and I was very puzzled on what it was and how it could still run without it. Know I know and I remove them on all that I take apart. Sometimes you just gotta give into disgruntled employees and show them the door. I have removed them in one of my motors, it sounded like the belt guard rubbing on the pulley. Now I have a 12hp that just has a rattle at an idle, and after it warms up it gets a little louder. Just curious as to what noise you heard on your motor. Thanks, Gene... MalMac 1,332 #11 Posted December 9, 2012 3609horse, the sound that mine make is a low knocking sound. The fact that I have heard this before and got gears out of other motors I have. Once you have heard this sound you won't forget it. To me it's the sound of death for a cast Iron Kohler. All the belt guard noises that I have encountered had more of a rattle to them. We all interpret noises different. The main thing is we hear a noise that is not supposed to be there and that is a good thing. The most important thing is we need to react to the noise before it becomes something that demands attention be it good or bad. The noise I heard from the motor is defiantly the sound of grenade gears giving the warning that they are coming out one way or another. Personally I prefer giving them the assistants they need before they do it all on their own.
