how to check if stater is working properly

B) my c175's battery keeps goind down and i put on new battery but over a period of time it goes down also. i think the stater is supposed to send fire back to the rectifier and from the rectifier to the battery is that correct, i have ohm meter, can someone tell me how to check the stater and the rectifier. and maybe where the wires are supposed to go, they may be routed wrong, it was taken apart to paint and the wireing does not look original....
