c161rat 185 #1 Posted November 14, 2012 I just read on another thread about the fin count on the Kohler motors and that there are some differences. I am wondering what does this mean. I have a 16hp with 12 fins and a 14 hp with 13. Is a 13 fin motor rarer then the others????? Is one better then the other????? 16horse with 12 fins
smoreau 658 #2 Posted November 14, 2012 Pullers like the 13 fin better then the 12 for some reason. I think it may be stronger? My 74 c160 has the 12 fin and I have a shaker k241 that is a 13 fin. I see the 13 fin block go for some good $ on evil bay
Kelly 1,033 #3 Posted November 14, 2012 I have heard the 16hp 13 fin block is thicker more meat to bore and less prone to cracking, I know the local pulling guys buy lots of my 16hp 13 fin blocks, I can't say on the other HP engines, they only want the 16hp engines or blocks. baerpath 517 #4 Posted November 15, 2012 The 13 fin 16hp block have a thicker cylinder wall than the 12 fin block. Therefore, a larger aftermarket piston/rings assembly can be used. And all 10, 12 and 14hp blocks have 13 fins. Only the "thin wall" 16hp block have 12 fins. "miller" Also the thicker wall majes it better when ofset boring for more compression Duane
