Road-Track 39 #1 Posted November 10, 2012 After tearing down a 14hp K321 after a dipper break and a loose nut on the rod. I took measurements of the bore crank and piston. The bore was STD and Crank journal. The bore was clean with no signs of a problem. All measurements in the bore were in spec for a new bore except one. The the top to bottom runout was .004", but the spec is max .002". Both top and bottom measurements were still in the tolerances of a new bore.... This is a working C145 tractor. For my C165 I would go the whole machine shop route, but do I really need too on this one? I think I can get away with new STD piston and crank kit and hone. Question - Should I go with a .003 over piston instead of a STD? The very top of the bore is 3.5010" and the bottom is 3.5050" with the middle at 3.5030" Thanks in advance! smoreau 658 #2 Posted November 10, 2012 I would say no. stick with the standard piston on this one. Make sure you remove the grenade gears!!
Road-Track 39 #3 Posted November 10, 2012 That's the plan those won't go back in. I was also going to replace the governor just in case while I was in there along with the valves. Thanks, I was leaning that way. Lets see if that is a consensus
tommy3horse 3 #4 Posted November 11, 2012 Hello; Typically the replacement pistons are .010 over. Sounds like you will luck-out proceeding according to your plan on this one. You may give a 2nd thought to the gears tho, K321 and K341 you will probably notice the vibration IMO. Good luck! Tom
Road-Track 39 #5 Posted December 23, 2012 Put the 14hp engine together without the gears and do not notice any odd vibration. The engine is strong now and no oil usage so far. I set the rpm'd to 3600 and it is smoother! Without the gears, it is much easier to put the crank in and time to the cam. A real plus! This forum is the best! Merry Christmas everyone :text-merryxmas:
Martin 2,133 #6 Posted December 23, 2012 glad it all worked out good with the engine. i guess the gears are a matter of preference but i always leave them out. ive never noticed any more vibration with them out and the engine is always quieter. so for me there out. you said this is in a c145, if you have the oem iso mount setup, im sure its a nice smooth running tractor......... Road-Track 39 #7 Posted December 23, 2012 It does have the shaker isolation plate as does my C165.
Buckshot 1 15 #8 Posted December 24, 2012 :) Glad to hear you got her back together and is running strong. On the K-series if it has balance gears, they are the firist thing to go in the scrap can. I do notice a little more vibration at idle but none at mid range or top end. :flags-usa:
